New 5 star crag near Rodellar.
October 27, 2006, 10:58:23 am
Booked my tickets to Barcelona for early Dec.  Just trying to decide where to go.  Done Siurana, fancy Terradets or Rodellar but are they likely to be seeping early Dec?  Apparently Bonjoy has some info on a new crag close to Rodellar but at a lower level.  Very good by all accounts. Got any info on this Bonjoy?

Other than that any crag recommendations for this time of year?

We were in Rodellar in late Oct and it was seeping due to some huge rains the week before, but I know of people getting great conditions in Nov/Dec, but it can be pretty cold. It's pot luck really, but there is still lots to do that doesn't seep even if you don't get lucky. Sector Egocentrisimo and the arches at Ventanos are both pretty seep proof and really good, plus the warm up crag is always fine.
The other place you are thinking of is Alquezar (pronounced Al-ke-tha). Less than 30minutes drive away. Alquezar is a very beautiful village which is a lot bigger with more facilities than Rodellar. The crags are behind the village. This is one of the main sectors, which has some superb long vertical type stuff on perfect rock, but can get too hot midday (you might be ok in Dec).

Same crag. Climber visible for scale. Thare is a world class 6c+ tufa line (route 15 on second topo) just out of shot on the left with a 7b+ extension (40m in total).

This is the other main section. The caves visible down the valley on the left are HUUUGE and home to some mind bending stamina fest.

Cheers, nice one Bonjoy.

Did you stay in Alquezar? If so any recommendations on accommodation?

Do you reckon it is feasible to stay there and climb at Rodellar half the time? Is it an ok drive??
Did you camp at Rodellar or is there a house or two to rent in the little village??

T'would be feasible to stay there and climb half the time at Rodellar. There seemed to be plenty of hostel type accomodation and it's not a long drive. We rented a chalet thing at one of Rodellar's campsites (the out of village one), it was good and had a good bar selling climbing stuff, reasonable food and the local honey which is the best i've ever tasted.

Just got back from this area and have more beta. Alqezar is a very cool old village with loads of apartments to rent. We just turned up and got one. The climbing is on 3 main sectors. The vertically one (see the topo) is very cool if you like vert. The left side of the 3rd pic is a cool wall with routes from 6a-8, and the caves are the third sector. The caves are truly  :jaw:

Crackin place, but you need to be at least a 7a climber to get much out of it. If you are an 8a man you would get a solid 10 days of fun there.
The drive to Rodellar is fine (30 mins) and it is a much cooler place to stay if you want creature comforts.
