Churnet conditions
March 02, 2007, 02:17:29 pm
Anyone been down there in the past day or so?

And if so, how dry were things, particularly the bits with new additions outlined in the recent thread?

resurection....

Im no local and i've not been before. Will anything be dry at all after the recent deluge, has anyone been out in the last week? I will be tripping from Leeds so dont want to turn up and have to go to alton towers instead... Thinking of wrights rock area, but haven't climbed anything there so anywhere else would be good too!

I would be surprised if wright's was wet, its pretty reliable in my experience. Haven't been out though. Really good crag.

I also went to Stoney recently and enjoyed it. Some great trad and the bitter fingers and wee Doris bays stay quite dry in the rain.

Being strapped next to some disease bag as they eject a fountain covid fumes whilst screaming sounds worse than the catwalk.

Lol! I meant that they'll all be locked down and the place should be empty. I wouldn't be recommending an experience half as awful as the Catwalk on Shark Day, don't worry.

To the OP: I went to Mirf's roof/Spellbound area recently - I suspect that'll be dry (bar top of Mirf's) and the climbing is amazing. Plus it's only 10 mins from the pub (if you don't get lost, that is.)

You're right, the top of Mirf's doesn't dry out very quickly at all since the rhododendrons have started growing back. Every time i've been recently it's been caked in chalk from plebs trying (and failing) to dry it out and there are new 'holds' appearing all the time from small breakages and overbrushing. Best to give it a miss in all but the driest conditions if you ask me. Wrights or Discreet are a better bet, but even so, I don't get why Churnet has this reputation for being a good wet weather venue. It's soft, pebbly sandstone FFS.

I don't get why Churnet has this reputation for being a good wet weather venue. It's soft, pebbly sandstone that often overhangs massively, has shelter from roofs above, and has a considerably drier climate than the main Peaks massif.
Obviously it should be treated with great care tho.

vs
https://www.weather-gb.com/en/united-kingdom/sheffield-climate#rainfall

It's hardly the Sahara by comparison.
It's also set in a deep wooded valley - basically a rainforest. Yeah, there's a fair few overhung crags, but they still suffer their share of seepage, condensation etc.

Anyway, i'm neither a meteorologist nor a geologist. It just pisses me off that (like everywhere else in recent months),

Sheffield is in the rainshadow of the Peak. I'm pretty sure the stats for Hathersage would be more enlightening.

Buxton is closer and maybe useful for Western Grit:

https://www.weather-gb.com/en/united-kingdom/buxton-climate#rainfall

That's the best I could find on the climate page. No Hathersage, Hope, Castleton, Edale, Tideswell not Stanage Plantation  :???: Put a pint glass outside the Plantation toilets and another outside the Rambler's Retreat and see what happens.

The lack of care is a different matter and I agree it is a concern.
