I keep finding old photos though not many of people on UKB unfortunately, but they're of an era (mid 80s- early 90s) so I'll keep looking.

I (personally) don't think this thread has to be exclusively for UKB members, the era(s) are whats of interest.

Regent Street, 30 years ago. Gulp.

Hasn't Adam Wainwright aged well?

Sorry Boingy I've spent most of my life since December 89 camera-less and curse it now (I pointed it at the Troll Wall, it broke, I took it to be a sign of something or other and so didn't replace for ages), so many people/events wish I'd captured on film.
Particularly you and Steve Earnshaw doing a convincing imitation of
'Beavis and Butthead fight over the last lifeboat seat on the Titanic'  it's in my mind's eye forever
Or to put it another way: do you remember the nest of adders next to the old wire gate by Face Ouest that you two tried to get through simultaneously? Tears roll down my face just thinking about it...

PS I'll keep scanning stuff into Flickr as I find it.

Good stuff Dave C. Can we see your profile / avatar at bigger scale?

Completely forgot about the above request, not quite the same shot but close enough. It's a pretty hoary old scan and the graininess of 400ASA film is a bit of a pain. I've realised the only thing to survive from that pic intact is the chalk bag - which I'm still using to this day.

Here's an old skool bat hang as well btw, courtesy of HB on his Angular Perspective (28) ca 1987.

Yep, Nick. Cutter is "Big" Al Williams and cuttee is "James" Barry Barrett. Al is rocking that mid-80s indie look.

I think this thread should extend to Old Skool Stories Per Request as well. Stoke sounds like it was a fun place during your time there. I hope for more.

Angela Soper sent me these pics through the email. I'm sure she wouldn't mind me posting them here. In her own words:

"1972; long hair, flared jeans and no harnesses!"

John Syrett trying Orchrist. This line was later snatched by Hank Pasquill in 1973.

No, but every time I go to the Cliff I think that it's just crying out for a quick solo. Looks like great fun.

Is that the thing above Si's arete? Looks amazing if so... but a terrifying prospect if you snapped one of them big snappy looking flakes off  :jaw:

I think anything snappable would have snapped a long time ago.

Great pictures Will.

I've done Orchrist and it all felt solid enough.  I don't think it's giving away too much to say the roof is easy but establishing yourself around the lip is a bit of a tussle.  I did it with the guidebook-prescribed two belayers, though I dare say it's a highball font 6b or summat now.  Excellent fun. :beer1:

I don't think a beer towel is enough for you to cross over from soloing to highballing.

Wanted to get on it for ages, but stories of the general grimness above the lip has always put me off (and the idea of falling off sideways from up there, even onto a big pile of mats).  Love how you have the highball progression that part of the crag: Syrett's roof, Bancroft's Roof, Orchrist.

Are there no snow drifts at the cliff at the moment?

My thoughts exactly. Dunno if I'd be happy 'highballing' it, it's not exactly D.I.Y. Is the top pretty grim then, always thought the roof bit looked ok...

I've led it with the two belayer trick, one across the other side of the gully.  It's not too hard reaching round the lip once you are established in the scoop but you wouldn't want to be falling off from there bouldering, there's no saying which way up you would land.

Its a steady enough move, bit of a reach that you have to commit to. Fine as long as you are fairly relaxed and not thinking about getting back down, but hesitation gets punished.

I fell off trying to lock off above the scoop. Landed with my heel on a small lump of protruding rock, got straight back on and did it, but then couldn't put a rock shoe on for a month or so. I wish I bounced like that now.

Just found old mag (mountain 42!) with article about recent gritstone developments by Pete Livesey. Good picture of Hank P on the first ascent of Orchrist (referred to as Goblins Eyes in the article) which i'll try and post later on. The picture of John Syrett is v interesting as according to Pete, John couldn't top rope the line! Lots of other interesting stats relating to 70's Leeds Uni club days too....
