I rearranged the boulders on CR a bit as a wet day activity about two weeks back, but the landing under the crux of the project is still pretty dodgy. I heard on the (racist) grapevine that Welford figured a static way of doing the crux by bear-clawing the multi mono cluster.
 My reasoning regards the landing on CR for anyone concerned - Firstly Dawes reportedly did the first (presumably headpoint as it’s a green scrittly face which would have needed a clean by abseil) ascent above a cat’s cradle of ropes, with bags of straw stuffed between rocks. Secondly the landing was made up of jumbled mobile boulders, some of which (I heard recently) have already been rearranged to a lesser extent by others subsequent to the FA. Thirdly the line is rather flawed in route terms(gets no stars and a poor write up in script for new guide) but excellent in bouldering terms , by this I mean you can easily escape leftwards onto a ledge just at the point where it gets dangerous, this makes the committing seriousness of the upper half contrived and unsatisfying if approached as a ground up route, obviously the bouldering approach and a flatter landing makes a ground up approach more appealing and less contrived feeling.

More GPH trivia. [Warning: Joe look away now, this doesn't concern you.] He once smashed up my neighbours bird table at a party after his coat had got burned. At the same party someone (you I think Jasper) got stuck in a room with Glen and some other guy playing I'll show you mine if you show me yours. Knives that is, although as Glen was involved I am sure he thought it would lead to other things.

That takes me back, especially as I threw that party. Think the Bear (is that Bungle??) might have egged us on, mind...
FWIW I found that incident wih Glen a little unsettling, not wanting to crash in like the SAS but not comfortable ignoring it either knowing the door inside had no handle... Fortunately GR resolved it by staggering downstairs, entwining himself in Joe's heavy velvet curtains, ripping them down and crawling about till overcome with exhaustion he sttled into peaceful loud snoring like some overweight Dracula behind the couch.
Later Joe told me that shortly afterwards loads of people kept approaching him to say thanks for hosting an event he knew nothing about .
I've got the only real photos of Johnny ascending t'Indian Face, the others are staged.
They'll not be great quality but I could scan and post them if of interest..

Johnny backed off from the good foothold out right (he's moving back up to this in #2) and lowered off the RURP for a breather/change of underwear. In #3 he's stepped back left and up to the overlap, in the process of committing to the crux (3 slaps in sequence if IIRC). Last photo he's pulling up beyond this and it looks like he might live after all.
Rob Drury and Sean Myles belayed individually on the ropes .We were the only party at the crag apart from the guys on Great Wall so any other photos you may have seen were not of the original ascent

how did you keep these private for so long? and good effort by all keeping the *first ascent* pics true history hush hush... I presume his boots / free gear deals were not the boots he did the route it...

Its awsome to think that the idea of spotting just didn't occur to us in those days. The whole thought process "I know, I'll stand behind my mate to ensure he doesn't break his back if he falls" just wasn't part of bouldering game.

Yes actually, go-karting. I'm going to stick to climbing, safer by far.
I keep finding old photos though not many of people on UKB unfortunately, but they're of an era (mid 80s- early 90s) so I'll keep looking.
