I learned to climb with Ron Heart from Boscastle. I remember very similar scenes to that in the late 70's, with Ron casually rolling a fag and contemplating the next pitch. Nonchalantly lifting a sardine from the tin he always carried in is shirt pocket (fag paper and baccy in the other).

Indeed. I once took a sizeable fall with the classic 'rope tied round the waist' set up. It wasn't much fun.

Yep, summer ascents on some never ending multi -pitch suffer fest in shorts and t-shirt; only for the temps to plummet as the sun dipped (usually on the last pitch 'cos you'd screwed the planning and dawdled through the tunnels on the walk in) and be a shivering wreck, almost unable to pull the rope as your second came up by head torch (if you'd remembered to take it).
