I climbed with Andy a fair bit in the late 80s, especially at Avon, which had a great scene back then and, probably unsurprisingly, bred a particular type of ultra bold tradder. Andy exemplified this breed - great company too. Still at it in Colorado.

Not at it so much now though - he became a dad a year or 2 back. He lives and works in Denver so doesn't have much time for cragging. I saw him at a BBQ in June at Naomi Guy's house. And TDK was there as well (Tony Kaye or Tone Deaf Kunt).

On Super Imjun at Ogawayama in Japan, 2006

Nice! I think スーパーイムジン is more commonly transcribed as "Super Imjin" or "Super Imujin". I have no idea if it alludes to the river or the war.

There was a great shot of Moffatt on that route in the interview with Chris Gore in one of the early editions of High mag. He flashed it IIRC.

[Thanks for the correction, JWI: living in a bilingual Japanese/ English household you would think I would get it right!]

Not necessarily… most Japanese I know are not overly concerned with getting a transcription to romanji right… :) But as a wiseacre with a smallish native language I am a stickler when it comes to transcription of foreign names.

The Hotwalls really were a desperate last measure - though you could find yourself excitingly high above a tarmac pavement!

Of course.

IIRC Hotwalls was vertical ... the bog wall just a steep slab. And higher and much crimpier.

I now see where Prof. Popp gets his love of high face problems on tiny holds in less than perfect situations from... ;)

For a real crimpfest this was the training wall for the discerning late 80's climber.

Or at least, one desperate for anything vaguely climbable....

Pompey Seawalls.

I pretty much started climbing at the seawalls in Pompey, I used to dream about being able to sit in one of those alcove/ window things. I only ever managed to get up some of the easy stuff, but started to get stong and badly lacerated fingers, sadly lost by 15 years of inactivty. I even found the topo recently for a real trip down memory lane. I miss that place.

Sat in the windows a few times. Bit of a shock the fist time, as they're barred and I'd counted on climbing through and coming down the steps inside. 20' jump to the shingle...

Which turned out to be a, do-able b, fun.

Never saw a topo for the walls though, it was just "that's hard" and "that's even harder"...

A bit of (bad) photoshop, to give a bit of perspective on that first shot. Courtesy of Mr R Welch of Alien Rock.
