rope access advice
August 21, 2024, 12:31:45 pm
Hi All
Not posted in years but I know there are a few IRATA people on here. I am looking to bring rope access to my work place and putting a proposal together to train a number of staff but once they are trained we will only have level 1 staff on site. My understanding is we would need a level 3 to write the access plans for the level 1s to follow is that correct?

Is there companies where you can hire level 3s to write plans and supervise your staff until you can train them up to level 3?

Currently looking at access techniques for training are they any good or any other recommendations? The company i work for is in Huddersfield.

Also sorry if this is the wrong section or there is a post already had a look in the search but could not find an appropriate post.

Thanks for any help.

Luke

Adam who owns Access techniques is on here and he will see this and respond i am sure. I would go with AT’s even though you are closer to one in brighouse.

You are correct in thinking you need a level 3. What is your business?

Agreed. Adam did me a favour and ran a workshop for me and a few employees at a small engineering consultancy regarding rope access (which we were continually interfacing with).

Hi, I’m Adam and am one of the owners of Access Techniques. I also wrote the IRATA training scheme and am currently chair of the IRATA training committee which also gives me a seat on the IRATA exec.

The role of Level 3 is team leader on site. They should be responsible for implementing the method statement (and rescue plan, if required) and identifying additional site hazards that might require changes to them. While the average Level 3 has not been trained to write risk assessments or method statements, some of the more experienced ones may be able to help you. IRATA are currently trialling a safety supervisor course but it is only to formalise the above as the current training is mostly practical.

Doing it in house also means managing your own equipment which requires additional time and expertise particularly with chemicals involved.

Are you using a contractor currently? Do your staff have particular skills that a contractor wouldn’t? I would suggest looking at that as a first option - I can recommend via pm - even if the plan is to use some of your own level ones and transition to doing it all in house eventually.
