(i never put it as my best album of the year, just one of them), but it is an amazing album, the best metal album of the year (Tool are not a metal band) even respected by the critics: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/story/0,,1966639,00.html
and they are amazing live to boot.

good call, and good lads to, we played to about 7 people in Liverpool with them. If it sounds a little bit like Isis no one in liverpool is bothered it seems. I don't think 2007 will be their year though, i reckon that belongs to [urp=http://www.myspace.com/bossk]Bossk[/url]

For me;

top album
Earth - Hex

best live acts

Venom

best live act

I think I'll wait until after ATP before I complete this survey...

Hmmm. A close call for me.

For overall impressiveness it has to be The Stooges on Sunday evening at ATP, particularly as Iggy egged the crowd to join him on stage and in a fit of youthful enthusiasm I leaped the barriers, dodged a security guard who was occupied with two other people, clambered on stage, gave Iggy both fingers and screamed 'Fuck You Iggy Pop' in his face (which he liked very much judging by his expression and the finger he gave me in return) and then spent the rest of the tune with my arm around Mike Watt jumping up and down whilst he hammered his Thunderbroom until security cleared the stage... I felt about 18 years younger.. (Should this be in the waddage thread???)

Other very good live acts over this weekend were:

- Bardo Pond (space/stoner rock, girl singer playing flute, massive guitar riffs and analogue oscillators): Like the best bits of Doremifarsolatido, Master of Reality.
- Comets on Fire.
- The Melvins: Ace with 2 drummers.
- Peter Brotzman and Hans Benninck: Skronking free jazz... it was badass.
- Sunburned Hand of the Man: Madness....

More ATP waddage ticks..

- Saying hello to J Mascis, Thurston Moore and Mike Watt prior to Nels Cline starting his set.
- Falling Down winning the Butlins K2 leap challenge which involved leaping for a trapeze from a tower on a top rope

True, they are amazing live, especially good seeing as how they even managed to slightly arouse the dullest of dull german audiences in Munich...

10,000 Days is brilliant too, don't know how I could have forgotten about it...

Waddage duly awarded.

Live act for me has to be Gomez.

Not sure about albums etc.

Waddage for gettting on stage with iggy pop, i saw him at leeds last year, I surfed the crowd to get over the barriers but was thwarted by a rather large goatee'd security guard in my attempts to ascend the stage  :(

Nothing this year has come close to this stunning effort from Mr. Hawley- the like of which I wouldn't have expected to love so much even a couple of years ago, but it's been life changing.

I dunno if it's a result of getting older, becoming a family man, being released from daily torture and pain, but this record has to be heard to be believed...

We went to the big homecoming gig at Sheff City Hall on Tuesday and the love and emotion in the room was tangible, not to mention the amazing sound.

Pulling over the 'Prospect' on Prospect Road at Heeley this morning, just pre-dawn as the lyrics
Quote
Cold city lights glowing,
The traffic of life is flowing,
Out over the rivers and on into dark.

had me welling up with tears pride and joy at, well, surely some of it was of a life growing up vested and rooted in the steel city that had just appeared before me, but it was profound in the way it struck me. I have been truly moved by this record, and the ones preceding it, and the live experience has just been the crowning glory....

No.  Unfortunately they clashed with Nels Cline but I would've liked to seen 'em.

Underground - I must go and buy that record.  Nice post BTW..

If we're going to start claiming musical wad points then I once dossed in the same house as J Mascis after a gig in Cardiff (Dinosaur Jr, Rapeman and Band of Susans, what a line-up!). Can't rememer actually talking to him mind.

After much deliberation

Flaming Lips - A War with the Mystics. Not their best, but still better than Most
The Guillemots - Fine oddities and quirkiness.
Snow Patrol - Eyes open. Flame me if you will, i know it was best selling album of the year which automatically negates any credibility, but I think its great.

The album that has got me coming back again and agan this year though is the Super Furry Animals Songbook. I know it's a couple of years old, but it's just so diverse and fantastic, as I'm sure many of you (including Duma) know.

Sounds like a great gig that, well, Rapeman.  Band of Susans?  Meh!  Thought the third guitarist didn't fill any textural gaps the other two left behind (always been suspicious of this band).

Can't rememer actually talking to him (J Mascis) mind.

Can J Mascis talk?

I agree with Underground, 'tis a fine album.

If you like that sort of thing I'd recommend Hats by The Blue Nile, it has a similar melancholic splendour:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blue_Nile

My top albums for this year are:

A Blessing and a Curse by The Drive By Truckers
The Animal Years by Josh Ritter
Born Again in The USA by Loose Fur
Rabbit Fur Coat by Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins (actually this might be 2005?)

Best discovery from the past was a joint first place between And You Will know Us By the Trail of Dead and Neutral Milk Hotel  (a big thank you to Bonjoy for that).

The only gig I went to was Kate Rusby, which was great.

Recently been introduced to The Blue Nile courtesey of an 80s scenester colleague. Sadly I can't side with devotees though. Listening to Heatwave at 8.30am on a dreary morning in Birkenhead is tortuously depressing! Sorry guys.

One of his other introductions though was The Icicle Works. From one spin, it seemed kind of reminiscent of early Fugazi and I very much enjoyed it.

Just wait until you get old and sentimental (like me), then you'll see the beauty in these elegiac songs.

(Actually, I kind of take your point - an entire album of The Blue Nile is a big plate of melancholy to get through in one sitting.)

Webbo, I was reading in the paper the other day that women (typically, that is) invest a lot in the symbolism of present giving, whilst men (surprise, surprise) don't. I bought my wife a Damien Rice cd for christmas, thinking that it would be the acceptable end of the dodgy James Blunt/David Gray spectrum of awful fakeness (she wanted the Take That album). Turns out I was wrong - I hated it too. Mind you, I think she liked it, so maybe I did something right.

She bought me a Johnny Cash biography, which I haven't seen yet as she nabbed it on Christmas morning and has been reading it ever since.

That's exactly what Chris (the introducer) said to me. ;)

And thank the forces that be Simon that you didn't end up buying your good wife the Take That album! Or their Ultimate Tour DVD for that matter!

pantontino.mr hawley was a success, however i was informed it is not like blue nile at all.
i once had to buy a robbie williams cd for the missus, luckily despite her claiming to like it she only played it a couple of times.
fans of mr hawley/blue nile may like to try ballad of the broken seas by isobel cambell and marl lanegam

Although I've got quite a bit of new stuff recently not much of it was actually released for the first time in '06. However, from 06 I'm liking Mr Beast by Mogwai. I was just given the Yo La Tenga album, which I think I'm going to like and yesterday got Sereena Maneesh but haven't really heard it yet. Less noisily, the new Dylan album is good. On the retro front I've particularly enjoyed  discovering the John Cale solo albums, also the Phil Spector wall of sound retrospective. And also just yesterday got something called 'Its So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You the Best' by Karen Dalton, which is completely fucking remarkable.

No real gigs but at the pub over the road saw John Dowland who is world Banjo champion or something and just happens to live in Runcorn. Falling Down you should have been there (a sick Dr Cave was). Literally jaw dropping!
