Of course, Jack Daniels isn't a bourbon, cos it gets filtered through charcoal chips. Otherwise known as the cottonpickin' Lincoln County process.  :)

The age thing is interesting though. Bourbons and Tennessee whiskey casks are stored at much higher temperatures (mainly because it's not bloody cold there) and so they do mature a lot quicker than scotch. Plus the barrels are always new burnt oak, so they release colour and flavour quicker. I reckon vintaging is a bit of a gimmick really. Actually, i think this whole quadruple-bourbon-sherry-ketchup-goat urine finishing thing with malt is an enormous gimmick too. i mean, they do taste different, but it's much more of a marketing exercise that anything really serious...

I think the long and short of it is that though the Americans do make a lot of shit stuff (Budweiser perhaps being no 1), they do knock out some pretty spectacular stuff too. Junipero gin is another thing that they've definitely got right...

My old folks talk highy of Powers Irish whiskey.

My older brother lives in Ireland so when they go visit him and family they bring back bottles of the stuff.

Not a major fan of whiskwy, but seem to remember Powers being pretty good tackle.

But I recall my dad telling me about this whiskey he had in Ireland, £12 a go for a 25ml measure. Middleton's, £125 a bottle.

Better be good for that price.

I suspect it's a throwback for wine making. Now if there's one thing with a lot of snobbery and bullshit associated with it, wine beats whisky hands down.

the thing is, whiskey making is far more controllable in that the raw materials are much more consistent in the first place, and most of the flavour and colour is added afterwards anyway.  so vintages shouldn't really be that different from each other.  where as with wine the grapes can be vastly different from year to year, and they are responsible for the majority of the characteristics...

 :yawn: You have just reinforced my point. So much bullshit about a drink. I can differentiate two different types of wine; red or white.

Give me a good  :beer1: any time.

bacchus we thank who gave us wine
which warms the blood within our veins;
that nectar is itself divine.
the man who drinks not, yet attains
by godly grace to human rank
would be an angel if he drank.

Highest alcohol to carbs ratio or something like that. Unlike beer anyway.
