Warning: Features scenic intro footage (climbing starts at 0:30), animal footage (albeit during a problem), and the usual fat punting in awful vests.

Another amazing FA down at Merchant Rock, we've been looking at this line for a while, so it was nice to see Alan get it done. So good!

I smashed my ankle up the day after, on crutches for a few weeks  :'( NNFN!!!

Brownstones adventures... After a decade of mystery, this year a visit from Polish Dave and a few sequence adjustments finally got me to the top of Paul Robins' local testpiece/enigma.

Yeah, classic Long Back Wall top out! It can be a bit gripping up there.

No, Dawid found the whole thing a bit too easy, I don't think he was fussed about the top.

Nice TTT. I remember that starting hold of Daz so fondly. Must have spent days there doing circuits when I worked in Bradford.

Here goes nothing...... I am toying with the idea of making some VLOG's. I made a few videos over the years, but feel there are pretty infrequent and in my day to day life harness my creativeness, so I am testing out a VLOG to see how it goes.

Anyway, here is my first attempt. It was meant to be a VLOG about my seemlessly never ending battle with Voyager Low start, but in true British fashion it rained, so just had a big session at the school. I managed to do Perky Pinky 8B (on the video) and filmed a load of James Nobles harder problems on the board. I would appreciate any comments as this is very much testing the water.

Hi Dan, effort on pinky perky, what's the blog about? Loads of potential to be creative with your climbing and filmmaking talent there dude. I always think there's more to 'making meaning' than just the direct subject matter or surface 'style'. Use of light as a metaphor for example. There's a great book called cinematography: theory and practice, really interesting chapters on writing with motion, use of metaphor and visual storytelling. Some great inspiration if you're into that stuff. I'd make it really short to. Like 2 minutes of quality or instagram short. Super 8 cartridges are 3 mins long for £50 but force you to make your home movie the best it can be. Be keen to see the next one 👊

Thanks Dan.

Cheers, yeah been following your stuff on Vimeo, I like it and you clearly test out lots of different styles etc. Its good. will check out the book thanks for the suggestion.

I don't know really, just kind of get sick of looking on social media and always see the "good bits' of people's climbing achievements, thought a VLOG might capture some of the struggles and  other aspects of trying to climb hard boulders with a full time job. We will see how it goes, might just be the one haha.

A video diary must be like a self portrait which has artistic (aesthetic) quality and personal authenticity portraying some deeper emotional aspect of the subject. This would set it apart from a factual report or record of climbing success. Some of the portraits and self portraits that I've found most effective convey something about the character of the person through colour, lines, shadow, expression composition etc. Take the same process forward into a vlog (which would be a pretty bold thing to do for anyone) and you'd possibly have something pretty great, or at least get to do something different! Glad you like the vids btw, you and Stubbs make up 2 of my 10 Vimeo followers haha.

I liked the school footage, but must admit to skipping straight to that part. My main feeling from the footage was that I want to be strong like James.

I made it through the first bit but must admit to skipping the school footage. Board climbing isn't the greatest spectator sport.

Great vlog Dan, I enjoyed the build up part and interview, good to set it into context and hear some background to the process i.e. the repeated drives to the Peak and a reminder that its not all sending all of the time!  ::)
