Solomon's Seal
October 30, 2006, 08:26:42 pm
Just thought I'd post this pic of Solomon's Seal illustrating how it climbs. Generally attempts to repeat have tried gastoning up the layaways, which doesn't work and is unsatisfactory as it's too close to the arete. The way Kim is doing it here is, i'm assured, both the easiest sequence and makes for a class problem. A neglected and unjustly maligned masterpiece I reckon (for those tall enough to try).

how tall have you got to be to make this worth trying? what exactly is the nature of the reachyness of it, armspan or foot-to-outstretched hand reach?

Stanage, above the buckstone on the edge. The Jester is just to the right. Gets 8a in the guide.

I think you'd be tall enough dave. The reach limiter is wether you can reach the LH sidepull Kim is holding, to pull off the floor, the RH start hold being a miniscule sidepull (visible on the right) or a pebble.

When we tried it pulling on wasn't the problem. I think the reach limiter is the move Kim is on - the hold he is going for with his right is appalling, and if you have to jump for it you aren't going to hang it.
Who has 'unjustly maligned' this problem?
You boys were up early that morning?

Maybe 'dismissed' or 'struck off peoples list of 8as to try' is more accurate than maligned. You're right about the RH handhold, it's very poor and a loong way from that foothold.
