who's the belay bunny
August 31, 2006, 11:29:31 am
Ok, bored at work, nerdy question time, I don't know the answers to any of these, but obviously need them to compliment my nerdiness. Who belayed the 1st asc. of the following:
Statement
Revelations
Cry Freedom
Hubble
Agincourt
Northern Lights
plus any other cool historical things which I could carry on listing til 'hometime'...

I'm guessing Tim Freeman for Revelations, and Ian Horrocks for Cry Freedom.

Heres a bit of trivia - who's belaying Jason Myres on Black Kabul in the old '87 stoney guide? It looks a bit like a very young andy harris, not sure if he's old enough for it to be him though - any ideas?

Its actually guy called Jon Retty, bit of a route wad during the 80's. Came from Liverpool, mates with Joe Healey et al. Started access work during late 80's last ever saw of him was bout '92. Famously shagged Lyn Hill whilst in southern france but thats another story

I climbed a lot with John Reti in the mid-eighties. Bumped into him at Helsby a couple of years ago - he's not climbing any more. Wish I'd known about the Lynn Hill episode then!!!

I climbed a lot with John Reti in the mid-eighties. Bumped him off at Helsby a couple of years ago and hid his body in a local gravel-pit - he's not climbing any more. Wish I'd known about the Lynn Hill episode then!!!

I dont know much but I know that Andy Popp who posts on here belayed Nick Dixon on the FA of End of the Affair. Andy then went on to make the second ascent for some major wad points.

Turns out it was the mighty fine Johnny Dawes (who I gather is a bit of a prolific Pex climber in the past). I blame Preposterous Tales and Neil Greshams trickery. The only reason I remember that fact from his description of EOTA is cos I met Andy once and didnt realise he was un poco famouso and tried to spend the next hour trying to remember if I had made a cock out of myself. I then realised it didnt matter.
Wheres my Remy Vsop  ;)

Now that thats out the way would anyone care to educate me on the whole thing about EOTA and Hubble. Im not much into sport so I dont know much about Hubble except it was a world first.

lol. Hope you liked it. Whats the deal with EOTA then? Was it originally a top rope problem or something?

Kind of developed in to a race between Dawes and Dunne, the best man won but was a little disturbed by the nature of his incentive to climb the route, I.E. blatant ego drive competition, hence the name, The End Of The Affair. Hubble the first 8C+, Ben Moon...
Do you climb at Pex alot then mate, went once and thought it to be a wicked venue, you could get v strong if you dedicated yourself...

Kind of like Royston Vasey. I never leave!
Bit fortunate that it is just about literally on my doorstep.

Builds uber strong fingers, but after a while you need to get out to a sloper-orientated venue to avoid chronic arthritis. Envious of your situation though Will.
