So much of the writing is awful, even the starting point of an interplanetary empire that needs to rely on wheat from one small hamlet on a moon?!

I think possibly the oddest bit in the second one

Rebel Moon Part Two, as pretty looking and as terrible as the first, but now also featuring a coal fired space ship?! The amount of yes people around Snyder that allow this tripe through must be astounding; but it's been top 5 on Netflix for a couple of weeks, so I'm sure he'll be getting the cash to make another one.

Popularity doesn't equal good; millions of people can be wrong.  Fortunately,  Netflix produces some really good movies as well.

On a similar theme, I fail to see what anyone sees in Taylor Swift's music,  its just anodyne ear fluff.  (Apologies,  irrelevant to films.)

But is it special space wheat that's made into space Weetabix, ingestion of which allows intergalactic navigation without the use of computers?

Le Mans 66 (aka Ford vs. Ferrari). Apart from Bale's dodgy English accent and cliché comments about cups of tea etc. I found it generally good and quite amusing at times. Damon is good as Carroll Shelby.

The car scenes don't go too Fast and Furious with an endless gearbox and it is pretty amazing to see a GT40 moving quickly.

Son and I watched this on Prime, and both enjoyed it, good low maintenance, agree it's a shame they couldn't have used a British actor rather than have Bale struggling. I'm a sucker for films and series where they get all the contemporary details of the time just right, must be so hard to do.

This is what Christian Bale sounds like normally!

As someone who grew up in the Black Country, his accent seemed fine to me for a movie

Also really enjoyed the film, not sure what it is about it but thought it had great spirit, maybe one of those where everyone seems to have had fun making it.

Just recently saw a financial historian friend observing that, I quote: "A huge portion of Star Wars happens only because the banking & payments system in the Galaxy apparently sucks." Because ...

"Qui-Gonn doesn't get stuck on Tatooine and meet Anakin if Watto simply accepts his Republic credits, or if there is a convenient way to exchange Republic credits for local credits. How is there no exchange mechanism!?" And ...

"The Rebellion isn't funded and Andor's big heist can't go  down if the Empire doesn't have to ship 80 million credits in *hard currency* to some rural outpost in order to make their quarterly payments. Guys just get a correspondent bank."

Here in Dubai, at the end of every month. Thousands upon thousands of salary cheques are drafted and signed, then taken by drivers to be deposited into the various banks of thousands of employees, because… I don’t fucking know.
The CFO explained it to me, but to me it boiled down to “that’s what we’ve always done’. I thought it hilarious that the CFO signs his own cheque.

In the Land of Saints and Sinners
I thought this was pretty good; although it's fairly violent, I felt that it really wasn't glamorised. In some ways, it's typical of a Liam Neeson film, but in others not so much. Worth watching anyway, it's on Netflix.

We found "No Exit" riveting.

Apparently critics were unimpressed though.

I thought it was ok, watchable and kept my interest to the end.
An added bonus was the brief glimpses of the fantastic scenery, presumably west coast of Ireland?. I have actually been but saw nothing but rain and low level cloud for 3 sodden weeks. It's the only complete wash out trip we've ever had!

Deliver'd - https://www.bfi.org.uk/interviews/fanny-lye-deliverd-maxine-peake-thomas-clay-their-17th-century-folk-thriller

Shropshire based tale of sadism and liberation with a hint of mysticism, I'm interested to find out more about Quakers. A solid 6/10

Cape Fear.
De Niro in terrifying form as an ex-con out for vengeance on the lawyer who 'unsuccessfully'defended him.Great supporting cast from Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis who plays a teenager on the cusp of her sexual awakening.
I haven't seen the original so don't know how it compares but I first saw this version probably around 30 years ago and it's still a cracking movie.
On iPlayer.

It's a great movie, but The Simpsons Cape Feare episode is better.

We've just seen Blue Bayou and thought it was awesome.

Looking at wikipedia, bizarrely it has been accused of "misappropriating trauma". To me that is as though such an accusation were levelled at the makers of "Mr Bates vs. The Post Office". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Bayou_(film)#Controversy

Rewatched Dredd on Film 4 recently, possibly one of the last decent action movies made? Solid 8/10

I also watched Rolling Thunder on Prime - apparently one of Tarantino’s favourite films 🤷🏻‍♂️- old school revenge thriller with psychologically complex characters. 8/10

An odd one - ‘All you need is Death’ Irish folk horror with body mod / dysphoria and occult themes. Low-Fi but entertaining 4/10

Much better than Stallone version and some good bits and cool effects, but the whole plot is basically the Indonesian film The Raid.

Went and watched The Fall Guy with the family on the weekend. Very low maintenance, gets a bit silly, but a good fun film. With a couple of fun surprises at the end.

Just remembered that I meant to mention some recent ones...

La Chimera - so captivating. Not "edge of the seat" but more "where is this going". Brilliant performances.

Omen - weird but good. Non judgmental intercultural implied themes... (says the mrs) Not as good as La Chimera, but definitely not derivative...

On Netflix now for a couple of days more before it goes. It's a beautiful film, I would have liked it to have more direction and less sentimentality, but it's definitely worth watching despite this.

Jurassic World: Dominion

This is seriously silly. Ridiculous mash up of self reference and bits of self parody.
However, despite the fact that it's absolute trash, I quite enjoyed it. Many of the action scenes are well constructed and often funny; worth watching if you really like silly dinosaur films.

Godzilla Minus One - I was gutted to miss this at the cinema but it’s on Netflix now.  It’s really good. Thoroughly enjoyable with a great story, characters and action of course.

Halfway through watching with son, based on his recommendation. It's great, considerably better than I was expecting.
