Chamonix-area bouldering
August 19, 2006, 11:08:40 am
I'm in Chamonix atm, and wondering if any of you know of any must-do problems in the lowish grades - basically; just anything that you think I should try before I come back home.

Cheers

One good boulder up towards the water works (?) Just head out towards Argantiere (?) it is famous and well worth a visit, if you are walking out of shamony, head rt towards the petit dru (?) and keep a look out. or just head out to were old folk used to quarry stones, its just before a museum sort of place. Any one fancy coming mountineering with me, my nav skills are great and i am to...

Theres some good boulders up at the Col de Montets. Take the road past Argentiere and carry on towards Switzerland - as you go over the col the boulders are on the left hand side. You should be able to hitch up there without too much hastle. Theres also the legendary boulder in Snells field - never visited tho so I cant coment on the quality of the problems.

But seriously - take a look around. Going bouldering in Cham is like toproping the first pitch of the nose. Its not quite what youre meant to do. If youre not up for the big snowy things (and quite frankly, most of the alps appears to be falling apart during the summer these days) get yourself up on the south face of the Midi and go and clip some bolts

Check out the Pierre d'Orthaz in what used to be Snells Field, about a mile out of town near the railway line. Almost as historically significant as the Breck.

The boulder at Orthaz was a great place to while away the evenings bathing in the post glory of sends/  such as the Bonatti pilllar ( highball) now fallen down / Nord face of Les Droites ( crampoons usefull !), halcyon days brings a tear to the eye.

Some very good bouldering at the col du Montets.

You don't need to travel that far, ole chap. We have our very own (unclimbed) King Cobra replica here in Cumbriashire. Oh, yes indeed.

Definitely worth going there just for the atmosphere. A couple of nice probs on the boulder, but it feels like the field is filled with the ghosts of British Alpine heroes. Wierd. The mate I bouldered with last time I was there is now among them.
