Perhaps he's a coward, but one with a very refined aesthetic sense - it's not big balls that got him up there safely but fear of the potential humiliation of explaining his hideous garb to hospital staff. 

In fact for his next solo he probably plans to psyche himself by writing his will at the bottom of the route - specifying that if he dies he has to be burried in an open casket still wearing his lovely tights-socks combo.
