Torridon
May 02, 2006, 12:45:30 pm
Well, I am shortly to set sail for the highlands of Scotland for a long weekend with a mate who is keen for some kind of foot blistering expedition up mount McSteepBastard, and wondered whether there was any bouldering to distract from what will otherwise be a weekend long pain fest?

D'you know, I knew you would be the man. I even contemplated PM'ing you direct, but as this is a forum thought it might be nice to share the knowledge. Stone country sounds like a good punt too, although at £19.95 it had bloody better have some nice pictures in.

here's a link to the page : http://www.stonecountry.co.uk/html/the_book.html

You think being the only person person living in Scotland who is active on this forum, I would be a safe bet? ;) Stone Country is an odd one; I really like it, but other folk have been less than impressed. There are some excellent photos and some good little topos, plus assorted other stuff. Yes it does have flaws, but is pretty good.

http://www.scottishclimbs.com/guides.php also has some topos that may be useful for stop offs on route http://www.scotlandonline.com/outdoors/feature_story.cfm?feature_id=71&feature_cat_id=11 has a couple too, which I think are duplicated on scottish climbs.
http://www.scottishclimbs.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1453&highlight=torridon also mentions some other stuff. What is your actual mission up there, Diabeg?

have pm'ed you by the way.

Just got back from a road trip up north, unfortunately had to cut it short casue of rain, so didn't get much else done apart from reiff.  Ardmair beach which is a pretty cool place, sandstone bouldering right on the beach, its just right on the road a bit past ullapool.   There more info on stonecountry.blogsport.com
Reiff in the woods looked well cool, feels really remote and adventurous, but with quality problems.  Its mentioned in stone country, but theres more detail on scottishclimbs.com
As for torridon, you can pick up neil hinchliffs photo-topo of the celtic jumble in glen torridon up there for a fiver.  Or fork out £20 for stone country, it has the celtic jumble area, and the applecross area.
Its worth buying stone country in my opinion.  Its very well-presented, and has some quality photos.
Watch out for the midges, they're out already.

Midges nooooooooooooooo!!!!!

Out early this season! swine creatures.

Dobbin when you heading to Torridon? Might be over there in next couple of weeks. Reiffin the woods looks excellent, but we were repelled by midges when we stopped there late evening. Dom, did you go up to Rhuba Ploytach? Potential round there looks ace.

Not sure, if that is the area on the top area of the peninsula then yes.  The routes there were awesome.  So much better than the pinnacle area which was heaving with english punters.  I had it in mind to try The Gift, but when i saw it in person my balls receded, and was happy enough to just onsight easier stuff.  Pretty good weekend climbing awesome routes in the sun, can't get much better than that.
