Bird restrictions at Porth Ysgo
April 08, 2006, 08:21:44 pm
I was down at the "new" areas of Porth Ysgo (ie Talfarach at the southerly areas by the headland) again today and was chatting to the farmer who owns the farm and the land that you walk through to get to the headland.  He's a very chatty and friendly fella if you ever bump into him.  Anyway, he was saying that there are four Chough nests around the approach to Talfarach and he suggested that we stay away from the area during May and June.  Apparently the bird warden says that those months are crucial for the breeding season.  The farmer was very proud of the fact that he has four nests on his land and Bardsey Island just the one nest!

He's really keen for people to climb there, he seemed to think that bouldering was a valid past-time!  So just avoind the area during these months.  I guess the other approach route to Porth Nefoedd via the steep grass adventure would be unaffected.

Cheers.

Might be worth sending a PM to Panton about this. I guess the next logical thing to do would be for someone to get in touch with the bird warden directly.

Yeah, I will do but I imagine he'll spot this thread pretty quick.

I can do that - he's one of my best mates.. lives near Hells Mouth.  He wrote the Flora and Fauna section for the Lleyn guide....

He's very sympathetic to climbing BTW and will want to do this sensibly.

Who shall I tell him to get in contact with who can provide the most accurate details about location, alternative access etc?? Would it be Simon?

This was brought to my attention last year by Jon Ratcliffe. I spoke about it briefly with Graham Lynch (BMC Access and Conservation officer), and he suggested that I investigate it further. I then got really ill with Chronic Fatigue and promptly forgot all about it.
Jon would be the best contact as he knows the new venues really well, and has been working on a topo. If you send me contact details for the warden, I'll pass them on to Jon.

Also Graham has now gone South (literally) so you might need to take it up with the new BMC Bloke (assuming they have one).
