100 grit 7's in a day
March 09, 2006, 01:14:39 pm
Well, is it possible? My friend is trying to do 100 7's in a year, and has about a month left to do 25 or so. They have to be problems he's never climbed before, so it's tricky, especially when anything above 7b is a bit too hard. He managed five on friday, but this got us thinking, just how many could someone do in a day, assuming they had them wired and went to places where there were plenty? And of course, assuming they were pretty damn fit...

surely it would all come down to how much skin you had.

I dunno. On a typical day out I don't think it would be impossible to have 100 tries at various problems... If each of those tries was a successful ascent...

Weren't there a couple of guys who did 500 routes in a day... Here we go:

Quote
The final tallies were 536 (John) and 502 (Shane), climbing (up or down) a total of 4,897m and 4,574m respectively, which is much higher than Everest from basecamp and about five times the height of El Cap.

Obviously bouldering is going to be more dynamic and tiring, but therein lies the challenge.

I reckon if I had em wired I could probably do around 10, though I'd be seriously knackered...but that means other people must be able to do a whole lot more...

How many 7a's are in the new peak guide? is there even 100 in there? Think it might be logistically tough to get round that many on grit. More possible at Font i would have thought. you would have to be enough of a wad for all the probelms to feel dead easy at the start of the day.

Yeah I did think that would be a problem.

At a guess, having had a quick flick through the guide (7as and 7a+s)

Wharncliffe - 10?

Stanage - 15
Burbage N and West - 15
Burbage South - 10
Mother's Pet/Secret Garden etc. - 5

Frogatt - 5
Curbar - 5
Baslow - 10
Gardoms - 5

Cratcliffe - 10
RHS/Eagle Tor - 15

Which is 105ish, with only the main areas covered.  Lots of driving and walking/runnig though...

On a trip to Hueco in the 80's I watched Jim Karn send 20 problems V-6 or harder in  a day. He had done all previously but didn't have them really wired. It was a big effort at the time, but fitness levels are higher now.

I think 50 7A's would be impressive as hell.

think the issues will be firstly, as Jim says, skin.

Secondly, it's gotta be balancing up the length of daylight against decent conditions - a long hot day in summer is great, but you ain't gonna stick many 7as in 30 degree heat.

You'd need to hope for a cool weekend the days the clock go forward, or more likely decent crisp autumn conditions just before they go back.

For the record, I did two in a day on good friday last year. Where's my medal?

I know it's a totally different rock type and many were easier problems etc etc, but on my last day in NZ, just before moving back to the UK, I went up to Castle Hill and did 206 problems in just over six hours.  My girlfriend did 100 too.  We'd set the targets of 200 for me and 100 for Caryl as a final homage to the glories of Castle Hill before returning to the dampness of the UK...

The rock is much kinder on the skin up at Castle Hill and I had the place wired, so I didn't find it too tough really.  There were a good chunk of problems V6 or above, maybe 20 in all and lots of V5's.  Obviously I did loads of much easier problems to start the day, but I did finish with a V7.  Skin was fine at the end and I could have done more but I wanted to socialise a little bit with my mates that were climbing that day too.

Anyway, that's my tuppence worth.  Not really relevant to the OP but I'm sure it will prompt others to report their own boulder marathons... :)

Is there such a condition as list-ophilia? If so, I think you have a severe case.
