Google Earth quizz II
January 16, 2006, 11:09:51 am
Roll up, roll up, for the great Google Earth quiz part II. Seeing as part I was completed with such ease I've made part II a bit sterner  . As with the last one, all images are orientated north. This time I have cropped off the coordinates so the option of cheating is removed. This time i've cast my nets further east and west than the Peak, but there are none from Yorkshire.

1. Name the woodland buttress. Tough.

2. Name the area/buttresses. Fairly tough, this shot looks to have been taken at an angle.

3. Name the boulders. Hard.

4. Name the bouldering crag. V hard.

5. Name the crag. Medium.

6. Name the buttress. Medium.

7. Name the bouldering venue. Easy for some.

8. Name the bouldering spot. Easy.

9. Name the crag. Easy

10. Name the bouldering venue. Fairly tough.

11. Name the bouldering crag. Tough.

12. Name the buttress casting shadow. Medium.

No clues will be given until you're really struggling.

Try looking at the picture upside down. Although this isn't going to help if you have never been there.

Question - No 11 - is the 'crag' top left?

I did that ages ago, but as you say I've not been. Long John's stride?

Does your silence mean the others are wrong?

No 11. The crag is below the spur in the road.
Correct answers so far.
2. Wharncliffe - but which bit?
4. Pleasley Valley - Fine effort. Did the opencast in the bottom right give it away?
9. Helsby - Anyone who ever drove to Wales from Mans/Sheff should have got that right away.
12. The shadow of the Cioch.
8. Burbage bridge/NW

So that's 4.5 out of 12 so far. Maybe i'll throw in a couple of clues.

Pleasely vale was obvious, though again I've never been, so didn't know about the opencast. My geology degree means I can easily differentiate magnesian versus carboniferous limestone from an altitude of 1500ft.

Long Johns stride it is.
South end of Hounkirk is correct.
 Cocking Tor was wrong.

No 1. The clue is in the caption.

Correct answers so far.
2. Wharncliffe - Long John's Stride
3. The Oxstones - another classic venue
4. Pleasley Valley
7. Brownstones
9. Helsby
10. Houndkirk Tor
12. The shadow of the Cioch.
8. Burbage bridge/NW

So that's 8 out of 12 so far. Two of the remaining ones should be piss really.

Is number 6 Harston.
Kind of might be but only been there once years ago and the greenery on the side of the butress looks wrong. But hey ho...
