Seynes/Russan/Collias - Gard, Southern France
October 19, 2005, 03:00:33 pm
In the interest of balance - anyone considering a winter routes trip to any of these places may be interested to know that a new topo is now available (it came out last April).

It looks like this:

Costs 30 €, and covers
Seynes - world-class tufa venue
Russan - world-class tufa and roof venue (covershot is at Russan)
Collias - Pleasant riverside slabs and walls, v polished on everything below about 6c (grades start at 2a, mais si, mais si)
Pont St Nicolas - new venue in the same gorge as Russan and Collias - apparently a bit sharp and chipped (according to one local)
Estezargues - Shady, short steep hard-ish routes
Grotte de Gargantua - new big cave in the gard - n-facing summer venue for hard routes (might be a bit chipped according to some guy on a forum  )

Plus a load of minor crags which were all in the last Seynes topo - and haven't changed since.

It's a collection of generally poor quality photo-topos. It'll get you to the routes alright, but isn't very inspiring on the bog.

Talking of the last Seynes topo - that was produced by the guy who'd done most of the development at Seynes, and contained much nicer phototopos and more text about the routes. This is still available, along with a free up-date from 2 years ago and there's been some tension about the production of this latest guide. The latest guide has a few more (recent ) routes in it, but isn't as nice to use - and you'll probably get funny looks from old guys if you pull it out at the crag.

However, this is the only topo now available for Russan & Collias.

this guide is a bit wank, but the crags are quite good.
