I think it's just black tape but, no, i don't think so.  You can lose as much flesh and blood as you like in the name of style but you generally only make that ethical point once.  You're not going to get any sympathy.  So now that you're sensibly going to tape something to the back of your hand it might as well have friction (or indulge a rubber fetish).  Maybe it's like martial arts - he's got a black belt in roof crack climbing.  Check his beard out!

Yes.  Read the older story.  Three other Eye Tall Ians originally bolted it (no idea who climbed it with them) then two years ago the man DB chopped dem bolts (but put in another one after the action, presumably as a lower off) and climbed it without them, but preplacing his gear.  Now he's gone and done it putting his own gear in whilst out there, just like you and I do when you we go tradding.  

Maybe he would've done it placing the gear on the lead sooner but it took two years for him to grow enough skin back after he did it the first time.
