Places not to go...?
September 01, 2005, 04:00:32 pm
A topic like this could save people a lot of time (although this may have been attempted before?)

1. Heysham Head;

Described by one as the most esoteric venue they'd ever been to, before vowing to never return EVER...

Any more?

From the Chatsworth guide, I would heartily advice giving Crich Tors a miss.

Not too struck with Stanage Causeway Slabs neither.

Oxstones are great if you know what to expect. Nice n easy walm down problems on the way back from the honeypot (GCSE geography) locations.

Walk in's a bit of an arse.

Quarry by Mother Cap is shizter.

I'd rather drive a few yards further and warm down with a pint of Bass at the Norfolk Arms personally.

never go to the Stirrup stones. Whatever the locals may tell you it's not true.
A sign of a bad place is when you get there and are just about to jokingly ask "is this it?", when your guide turns around and says "this is it"

A well kept pint of Bass can be a fine thing. A little oversweet but otherwise as good as big brand name beers get IMO.

Don't drive and the Oxstones was as far as my push bike was going to allow me.

Anyway my aunt worked at Bass so it's in the blood?!

Never walk all the way to check out "The Wow Prow" (Glenmacnass?)  Never has one unclimbed line been so knowingly oversold.

And under no circumstances should one ever attempt to visit The Mysterious Quartz bloc on Anglesea.   These things are obscure for a fucking reason.

Arch cunt, Perrin Junior (RIP) had me here twice!  (And that sentence is so wrong I leave it be.)

Got to agree with this sentiment. You  wade balls deep through an epic bog to discover that there ain't no line there. Yeah there's a line in the photo and all the way on the approach but when you're standing underneath it its gone. Proper disappointing.
I'd go so far as to say that glenmacnass ain't really worth the walk unless its been dry for ages and the weather is perfect. Solitude is, without doubt, world class, but very little else is even close.

You are right you have to choose the right conditions to go to Glenmacnass.
A group walked in on Saturday and just as they got their shoes on it started to lash horizontal hailstones.
Having said that Glenmacnass is a great place to boulder but is not for everyone.

(Dave F, does the pic mean this line is now climbed?  Is it still TWP?)

My angle was that the time I visited all sounded very enthusiastic for this rock.  And I remember being enthusiastic too.  But... well... different strokes for different folks.

knowingly?  Let me pause for reflection for a second...   erm... Well, the best I can come up with is, wasn't it you doing the selling?

By the by, I thought all that bog trotting was fucking hilarious - just like N. Wales.  I found that valley really beautiful and is certainly worth the walk to boulder or not.    (Going here - even in the rain - is absolutely preferable to going to The Mysterious Quartz Bloc of Anglesea, a second time.)

I still wouldn't go there again just for that line, I thought we climbed better looking lines when we were there anyway; and that's why I'd like to go back.  The Irish are lucky people.

OK - I'm reaching here - are you @ home drinking, Dave?

Surely you'd get the sack if you were that blootered you couldn't extrapolate that TWP might be an abbreviation of The Wow Prow!

Do they let you drink @ work?  Cool job!
