Before the conversation gets carried away about the Churnet, I think that whoever it was that mentioned the Virgin Traverse in the first place meant the traverse of the Virgin Block at Almscliffe, not the Churnet one.

isn't powerband an eliminate cos it's supposedly easier to do the low bit in the middle? also people get uptight about the last move..?

yep t'was I - not that I had any concrete reason for suggesting the Almscliff Virgin Traverse as a first V4 contender ... just seemed a likely possibility - dead popular venue, hideous sapping moves rather than pure technical difficulty etc.

That's true. Jerry Moffat beats Jerry Moffatt for the claim to the V9 spot...

Good point. Must still be pretty hard with the "easy" sequence though. V10?

Jerry said he did Powerband in 8 days (after only climbing for 2 months after having 2 years off from injury). Impressive, but you'd think if anyone had been working on something around that period they would have been capable of something a lot harder. Maybe not, maybe Jerry was just streets ahead?

speaking from a position of no experience it's probably still the same grade but it's the principle you see...lovejoy will doubtless whip out his gravy yardstick.

Is PB really an eliminate? Basically it was done originally using all available holds by the easiest sequence. This being hard for the short a short person sequence was later found for the middle bit (which isn't the hard bit either way) which only makes a diffrence if you are short.
Is Anesthesia an eliminate because you can do it by walking along the handholds? No of course it isn't, it's all just part of the gayness of traversing.

So Powerband and staminaband aren't really eliminates unless you're short?

And moffatrocity is 7b+...

Noticed a thread on ukc about the Hobson Moor traverse:
Quote
60's probably but quite a bit was dug out by some oldish chap in the 80's thus adding a few feet to the bottom. He used to brush the routes too with a broom and do the traverse with a fag in his mouth..ahh tradition.

Classic. What grade does that get? V4/5?

And when was the V3 Lord traverse at High Rocks done?

Ah well, the image of some geezer leaving a small trail of smoke as he climbed made me smile.

Found this on the NMC website:

Quote
From these rocks, a walk directly across the summit of Shaftoe will bring one to the western end of the shallow valley. On either side of this is a strip of low rocks, perhaps 15 feet in height. Each gives several chimney and corner climbs, and of course sundry low level traverses. There is no difficulty about route finding as most of the rocks can be climbed in one way or another.

Written in 1950 apparently. Anyone know what these traverses are?
