Are they all there cracked up to be? When punters complain of excesive brushing at Widdop is this not just wear!

In reply to post 109: controversial! Hard to say I reckon - some stuff is just wear but some people do over-brush. The stuff that's on the chip page on this site was definitely chipped/brushed out, coz I was going to Cratcliffe every few days at the time it was done, and it just appeared out of nowhere one day. not noticed the stuff at Widdop, last time I was there the place seemed in pretty good nick. what problems are affected?

In reply to post 110: Thats it they havent, but some nurd on RT suggested they had, one being a low foot hold on Right Edge Right. It's just wear. But some area of some crags could do with a brushing. eg the Puff Pastry boulder at Sypeland. Bur the desired affect could probably be achieved with a stiff nylon brush.

In reply to post 111: People do get overly paranoid about it, but then there has been a lot of over-brushing in the Peak recently. I think it's only ever a few culprits, most people know the score. I reckon people should be worrying more about the fact that places like the Bridestones are falling apart - something could be done about that using sealants - bmc?

Yep last time i was at the bridestones (2007) i noticed that there was a lot of wear on certain problems that wasn't there a couple of years before. If this is due to wire brushes or just general wear and tear i couldn't tell you. But as a matter of course i think wire brushes should be banned and people using them tied up and tortured slowly over a burning fire. Nylon brushes and gennter use is more acceptable. God knows what the bridestones look like now then..I do remember the left hand sloper on short smart wall felt like someone had brushed it smooth last time, as opposed to the first time i did it when it was far more positive. Wire brushing can simply take out those important pebbles....anyway any one got any beta on winsome at the Wimberry boulders?

can we try not to dig up 7 year old threads unless you've got a really good reason? thanks.

Now that is a blast from the past - one of the topics that was started in the forum software I wrote from scratch but soon realised I was onto a loser :)

Grit- no debate.
Certain other rock types, used properly, in the right circumstances they may be of use.  Sometimes.

Feel free to debate.....

Bridestones, Cratcliffe, Widdop, Sypeland all mentioned in the original post are all grit venues where wire brushing was an issue, hence the no discussion assertion.

In font i have seen the locals using a wire brush, but only on the initial clean up of a new problem, removing moss etc, so maybe in this instance its ok, on our sandstone here in the south, the equivalent would be a bass broom. Common sense should prevail.

The Kebs are trashed, in my opinion, more because of lack of care.  I don't think brushing is a major issue, more the climbing on it when the rock is damp, and the bicycle feet that has resulted in huge erosion.

It's probably wise to have a general No Wire Brush policy, otherwise the general punter public will be out there scrubbing their favourite hold on the Joker until any Joker can hang off it.

Good post GCW - bicycle feet big problem on southern sandstone, as well as people trying harder stuff when it's wet (small flakes etc tend to just snap off). That is a problem with climbers dogging well beyond their ability down here - appalling footwork (none at all really) and being hung in the same place for about an hour leads to exaggerated erosion of holds. Same applies to the starts to hard bouilder problems where footholds get larger and larger or they disappear. The other big problem we have here is the use of brushes (any f****g brushes) as the rock is so soft it can't take it. You only have to take a look at the north boulder at Harrisons rocks to see the effect of this. You brush the skin off and there is only sand underneath, therefore those of us who care have to go round applying sealant to the damage.

I'm convinced that most of the  wear & tear on the lower footholds of boulder problems ( & quite a bit of the poor footwork you mention) is due to failing to clean shoes properly, or in most cases at all.

Went to Bridestones for the first time the other week and couldn't believe the state of some of the holds! I was always under the impression that this was due to the nature of the rock and not wire brushing?

If it's who I think it is, it's all in the name of exploration.
And he knows how to use it properly.

Circulus vitiosus i.e. you now know why I have a wire-brush (and it never goes near any grit boulders).

The last time i had need of a wire brush was when i came off my motorcycle and wore my arse away on the tarmac...the nurse had to brush it clean with a wire brush and iodine.....that's why i now have wire brush phobia....

An army major visits the sick soldiers, goes up to one private and asks:

"What's your problem, Soldier?"
"Chronic syphilis, Sir"
"What treatment are you getting?"
"Five minutes with the wire brush each day."
"What's your ambition?"
"To get back to the front, Sir."
"Good man." says the Major.

He goes to the next bed. "What's your problem, Soldier?"
"Chronic piles, Sir"
"What treatment are you getting?"
"Five minutes with the wire brush each day."
"What's your ambition?"
"To get back to the front, Sir."
"Good man." says the Major.

He goes to the next bed. "What's your problem, Soldier?"
"Chronic gum disease, Sir"
"What treatment are you getting?"
"Five minutes with the wire brush each day."
"What's your ambition?"
"To get the wire brush before the other two, Sir"

too true , and its even more unpardonable now as with the use of matts is much easier to keep boots clean and dry ....

I always found it easy using a mat ( matt used to hate it when we insisted on standing on him  :)) but a lot of people think just a pad's good enough & it usually isn't
