Pump Traverse
April 18, 2005, 01:00:31 am
After a fairly unsuccessful weekend in North Wales (I had the date booked with friends for some time, even though the weather was gob), I did manage to get out for a couple of hours at the RAC boulders.

Ok, so it was pretty damp and it couldve been warmer but, for the life of me I could not finish the Pump Traverse.

I'm looking for some pointers really on turning the corner - I can comfortably sail through to the jug on the corner with my right hand, but I can't seem to pass this. If I start on the section after the corner, I find it a doddle - it's just linking the 2.

I'm hoping to get back there in about a month, so suggestions are welcome. I'm sure 'get stronger' would probably work, but it's probably more to do with shit footwork.

Jon.

It sure is a tricky transition from swinging around like a gibbon, to a more deliberate body positioning, especially if you are tall. Ain't real climbing great!

There are some little grooves just back from the lip - make sure you get the correct hand sequence, so that you end up with your left hand in the highest groove, enabling you to reach high up the sloping arete. (This, and the next bit is much easier if you are tall, by the way.)

cheers! :)

I was going again with the right, which looks like it was the problem.

Another tip: rock down low onto your right foot when turning the arete, getting your C of G as far right as poss. makes the transition easy...
