Do you want to print them out or just get 'em on screen?
A flatbed will give good enough results for screen/web use, and you can do other stuff. Make sure you get one with a transparency hood so you can scan the original neg/ slide.
Alternative, if 35mm/ APS film is all you will be scanning, is a 2nd hand film scanner.

after loitering round johnny browns for a while i managed to pick up what he's got: a Nikon Coolscan IV. replaced by the V now but you should be able to get one sub £300. depends what you budget is. jessops do some much cheaper ones. if you are willing to spend the best thing to look for is ICE for removal of dust and scratches. plenty big enough scans at real good quality.
might be worth trying ebay. i did for ages but then got pissed off at continually getting pipped and managed to pick one up new from waltersphotovideo for less than they were going for on there. shop around innit

Would any owners of a decent scanner be prepared to scan some slides for a reasonable fee? I am on the verge of buying a Digi SLR, so cant really justify getting a scanner too.

Resurrection.
How does everyone like their scanners? Decided I can't afford a digital SLR at the moment, so looking at a 35mm film/slide scanner. Need to do somethnig with the 1000 plus slides lying about.
Any advice on anything new?

Scanners are great. As said above, me an cofe ave both got Nikon coolscan IVs. Well good, ICE feature is defo a necessity. Software and results are great - we just did a gallery of 15 x 10 prints that are better than ilfochromes. The successor (V) has higher resolution for less price - 430 bees or so.
Scanning at about 2,900 ppi will give you A4 prints, file size about 30Mb.
Scanning at higher res does not get much more info from the slide but allows for bigger prints without interpolation.
Shooting then scanning slides still has advantages over digi, especially with storage and retrieval. Digi only has advantage of instant review and theoretically zero running costs. I struggle to use my digi for serious stuff.
