EES For Europe imminent
October 10, 2024, 10:02:59 am
Albeit very delayed, and still forecast to be a few more week off being functional, looks like the end to counting up EU stamps manually. Also gone are the days of taking a chance on border officials not bothering to track you 90 days in 180 properly.

Crazy that this can't be done online in advance before travelling!

It sounds quite far from ready, according to this article published yesterday

Yeah different places quote different timelines. Either way its probably weeks/month away rather than much longer. Good news for non EU passport holders winter sport trips and taking advantage of lazy customs officials and stamp counting

EES will be a one off registration that requires biometrics, hence the lack of online capability (though there is an app in the pipeline but I don't know the extent of what it is intended to do).

The ETIAS, when in comes in sometime in H1 2025, will allow online applications.

The tunnel terminal in Folkestone has a substantial new shed with dozens of supermarket self-checkout style terminals currently being installed. If this is the fingerprinting hardware, then that side of things looks nearly ready.

My laptop supposedly has fingerprint recognition to sign in, but it won't tolerate any skin ragging at all. I've given up trying to use it, as even my ring finger seldom has a sufficiently flawless finger tip.

Will that immigration control fingerprint recognition also have that issue with climber's fingertips?

..... No. I think the police and immigration services operate with better technology than is installed on laptops sold to the general public.

The gap is smaller than you'd think. Public sector technology projects have a habit of getting mired down in dodgy procurement processes won by contractors who then deliver expensive solutions of questionable effectiveness.

US immigration fingerprint scan has issues. It always takes ages for them to get an acceptable print.
