Rock Fall Burbage South Quarries
November 07, 2023, 08:08:23 am
There’s been a serious rock fall incident at burbage south quarries on top of Trellis which looks to have covered a lot of the floor below it and on top of it, some massive blocks have come away from the rock above it.

Periods of exceptionally wet weather increase rockfall risk. That fatal route collapse at Harper Hill in 2003 was also when there was lots of flooding etc.

Comparing to the image in the Burbage guide it's clear that at least eight chunks have come down including one pretty big bit (4 x 1.5 x 1 m approx).

Does that mean we can landscape the bottom of Trellis so it's not so high?

A stark reminder that geological time includes now...

How's the Cioch opposite looking?

The Cioch looks ok (though not sure what ‘not ok’ would look like) but looking around the rest of the quarry with a more skeptical eye now, there are many large, loose, stacked blocks (like in the back path-side corner) that would be pretty catastrophic if they went. I won’t be hanging out in there much now.

It’s this stuff that’s come down.

3 is Simpering Savage, 4 is Poisoned Dwarf, 5 is Trellis. The routes Bracken Crack and Shattered Crack (between SS & PD) have lost their tops as has The Ramp, the HVS right of Trellis.

Keep on Giving is still there by the looks of it but as Felix14 says, the block it started from is gone!

I think the Cioch looking "not ok" would be pretty obvious  :w00t:

Ha! Well, yes. But I was wondering if there would be signs, or, if it were to ‘go’, whether it was be sudden and catastrophic. Would it tilt a bit and start leaning over for a few weeks as its foundation softened and crumbled…… or would it just creak, crack, and roll down to Hathersage… 🙂

Looks like there's potential for some high quality lowball choss in that debris pile

Had a closer look today.
The scale of the rockfall looks bigger in real life.
There are a couple of dodgy hanging bits of rock which look like they could do with helping down.
Some of the lower block have been shift by impact from falling blocks. This includes the bit with Trellis on, which has slipped by about 2 inches. You certainly wouldn't want to risk climbing on it, and the triangle of rock near the bottom looks destined to fall off, but the larger back section looks like it's probably keyed in by the block to the right.
I'm in touch with Eastern Moor partnership about any restrictions, and I've suggested on the RAD to give the rockfall area a wide berth in the meantime (obvs).
