Due to pesky running eating into my time I haven't been fishing for ages!!! This has inspired me to a book a week day off after I return from Font to hit up the big fish mecca that is Ellerdine Lakes...

no pics for this, but with all the bad stuff going on in the world, I feel pretty lucky to have a head full of trying to work out how to tie my pike flies to improve my take to landing ratio

over 20 takes and even more follows this evening resulted in 4 little jacks on the bank - which is four more than nothing and certainly a lot more fish interest than usual

my latest plan is to tie a sparkly snake fly with a 2/0 hook at the back, using a continuous wire trace through the fly and 30cm to the leader

not really important, it keeps me happy and out of the pub

How are the pike flies working for you Lagers?

not doing enough, but it definitely works well having flies with hooks in different positions - front, middle or rear - depending on  how they are taking

if more than 1 hook is allowed, add a stinger - or something like this

I caught loads of chub in the Ardeche this summer - mostly in the 1.5 to 2 lb range, but a few 4lb whoppers

a few common carp and very few barbel (despite seeing hundreds)

oh, and loads of crayfish (french fishing license allows use of traps and no season/size restrictions on American Signals)

Good work Lagers - did you catch the chub on the fly?

I was taken river fishing for the first time the other week (shame on me!) and caught a load of chub to 4lb and dace - lovely stuff!

chub were mostly on live bait (minnows, dace, chublets) - greedy, big-mouthed bastards

155lb sturgeon on a 16mm pink krill wafter. 30 minutes of hanging on until I managed to net it. Had a 50lb sturgeon a few hours ago also. Amazing animals in the flesh . Totally from a different era

France, I lost one this afternoon that was bigger. It's holds the French record in here so I expect it was that fish.

Nice. We have hooked them but not landed them. Did it jump, every time we have hooked them they take to the air like a trout.

A trip to Canada to fish for them is on my sons list. I blame River monsters.

This one didn't, it's head and shoulders came out close in. It wasnt until the end of the fight I saw it and realised just how big it was.
I had another next day at 50 lb and that came out of the water like a marlin.
