Acromion Fracture
May 22, 2023, 12:35:08 pm
Not me this time, but Nat...

Has anyone got any experience of having an Acromion fracture?

The way it was described on Sat was that the end of her shoulder is 'hanging off'. It's likely not relevant but it was caused by a bike crash (pothole turning the bars) at ~25mph which seems to have thrown her over onto the back of her L shoulder.

As usual emergency care (via Airedale) minor injuries was fantastic. She's been given an appointment with ortho today that's 2wks from now which seems quite a long time to sit at home taking Co-codamol. I think she may get private health cover through her new employer but it's not overly clear to me how that works (will she need a referral from ortho first etc.).

Not acromion fracture, but close so might be of interest…. I took a similar sounding fall off my MTB a few years back and broke my left scapula into several pieces. Treatment after a&e x-ray was a sling and over the counter pain relief as needed. I assume Nat has a sling?
Pretty sure my first ortho appointment was over a month later they just did x-ray and checked mobility and told me to keep using the sling before sending me on my way. Only other treatment was a physio self referral a month or so later. If they are happy with the x-rays then conservative treatment is the norm I think?
In terms of outcome I was a less than model patient (me and the kids did an uplift day at bike park Wales three weeks after falling off, I rode gently…) and it healed fine, a bit achy for a while and slightly clunky for several months but no long term issues in particular.

Thanks Nik. Yes, she's got a (fancy) sling and codeine based pain relief.

Nik, your post was pretty spot on. We were told that due the shoulder muscle effectively holding it in place and providing good blood flow they'd do nothing and look to start physio approx. 2wks in with the expectation of it being healed in 4-6wks with full mobility back after 3 months. She's now off the pain meds and was back on the turbo trainer Sat morning followed by lunges  :tumble:.

She saw David Bowe (at the Yorkshire Clinic):

He seemed really good and was happy to chat sports injury with us both.

Glad to hear that all is well.
And good to get reassurance that my fracture wasn’t totally mismanaged…
I was on the Isle of Man at the time and wasn’t 100% convinced by the service…
