Computer Monitors
June 27, 2021, 01:04:13 pm
For the first time in more than a decade, I am in the market for a monitor. The monitor will be used in my home office. If the colour and resolution is really bad I suppose that I can always edit photos on my laptop (≈ 3 yo macbook pro), but I would prefer if I could do it on my stationary (but I am a bit worried that this would require stupid money). I will write stuff, make powerpoint presentations and do some programming in various IDEs, and quite possibly do a bit of layout work.

I guess that 24 inches is large enough? I do not require a built in webcam. This is all I know.

I guess I am a bit overwhelmed by the reading required on the topic. Can someone precise it for me?

Cheers.

There was another thread on this recently:
https://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,30799.msg614846.html#msg614846

The Benq we have is fantastic and when I went back to the office on Friday reminded me how poor the work supplied monitor is for CAD work.

I’ve had a look through TT’s thread but I’m not quite sure what I’m looking for so thought I should ask.

I use spreadsheets and code each day and I’m looking to upgrade my monitors.

My current monitor is a bit crap with colours. I feel like the shit contrast/blacks make it harder to look at things.

I’m still trying to decide between single/dual screen (I like the idea of being able to have one in portrait mode) but I wondered if anyone can advise on what to look out for spec wise?

I’m probably going to go for screens under 24” if getting dual so I think this rules out a lot of the higher resolution models.

Personally big big vote for dual screens.
I have 2 27" side by side both landscape, one is 4k (3840x2160) 60hz refresh rate and 2nd 2560x1440 165Hz refresh for the odd bit of gaming. I don't really notice any differences between the 2. So wouldn't worry about getting 4k for a 24" monitor. Though I do notice a difference between my wife's 1920x1080 monitor.
One tip - I've got both mine mounted on a vesa dual monitor mount - something like this. Frees up space under the monitor on the desk and makes minor adjustments super easy. Check that the monitor you buy has a vesa mount option if that's of interest.

Thanks for that - it’s really useful. I’m definitely going to go for an adjustable mount too.

Does price make much difference in the quality? For example, these are two of the cheaper QHD one’s that I’ve found in the size range I’m after. Though it seems there isn’t as many at sub 24”.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It's not uncommon for the same panel (the bit you actually look at) to be in different monitors or for the same monitor to be given different names / prices for consumerism reasons.

In this case, I can't find any details with the cheaper one on how much of the color gamut it shows whereas the more expensive one is spec'd at 99% of sRGB. Which might mean some colours might look off. I'm definitely no expert on that though.

If you've got the space, 27" seems to be the spot with a bit more choice.

At home I've got the BenQ monitor that I've mentioned previously and use the second screen as my laptop on a mount/stand. Work supply me with a fancy Alienware laptop (for CAD work) which has a lovely screen (although it's not what I'd describe as ideal for travel). Mainly I'll be working on one (i.e. drawing) and looking at datasheets on the other so the smaller second screen isn't an issue (although at the previous place I had dual 24" monitors and that was a touch better). I also splashed out on a BenQ screenbar recently as to not crowd the desk with a lamp and it's pretty  8).

Nat has a HP monitor that we bought from Argos using some vouchers. It's good enough but the build on it is nowhere near the BenQ and taking that a step further, the monitor I have at the office is a lower end HP and the bloody thing wobbles all over the place when someone walks past!

2x21" here and feels plenty wide enough. I still find myself using one as primary and the other as 'spare'. L to R is a long way, I think I'd get neck ache with 2x27 ;D

It's a world better than a single monitor or laptop plus 21" that I was using before. Slight colour difference between the 2 (bought at different times/makes) but they weren't expensive, say 100+ quid. I don't think you need to go bonkers.

Bump. Monitor died recently and want to get a new one soon without any faff, i.e. from here: https://www.currys.co.uk/computing/computer-monitors/pc-monitors
(Unless anyone has any better ideas in manchester ofc).
24" or 27", decent quality / response time as there will be some gaming use, but otherwise cheap is fine. Don't need fancy bells and whistles. Ta x

Got a decent deal on something with bells and whistles from laptopsdirect. You can  pick up from Elland, build in a trip to west vale quarry, and get to escape the hell hole that is the west side of the Pennines. Winner winner.

Thanks for the replies that don't involve getting something from currys or elsewhere in manc! Even if west vale is quite alluring  ::) ;D

Okay okay, say I did decide to do a casual spot of monitor collecting in between laps on pigshit wall, what would you recommend from laptopsdirect?? Sub 200 notes, 27inches, 75hz fine, don't need 4k really. Tempted by the refurbished MSI for 160 /180 depending on condition...

Sound reasonable. I was looking for 24 and ended up getting one of these for £200 (work were paying), which Has worked for me.

There's a fancy looking Hannspree HG270PCH 27" Full HD 240Hz Curved going for 199, but depends if you already have a adjustable monitor stand and need anything except hdmi. Bon chance.
