E-Bike Recommendations
October 23, 2022, 02:55:08 pm
Any recommendations for an e-bike that would be suitable for both lengthy crag approaches and the occasional commute?

Ideally for <£3,000.

Decathlon seem to have a few which are very keenly priced (e.g.) but I've no idea if they'll be any good!

Yes, Decathlon are normally very good value for money. Particularly if you can get it with the cycle to work scheme as they don't charge any extra admin fees even on sale bikes which is unusual these days.

Personally, I would only spend that kind of money on a mountain bike where the weight and spec are important. For a run of the mill commuter it is probably overkill as they are all limited to 15mph and the weight is largely irrelevant.

On that budget I would be going to my local specialist bike shop. That way you can get something tailored to your needs. You wouldn’t want to end up with a downhill ebike if your are wanting to do long trips into the wilds.
Try contacting Dan Varian as he uses one and probably would have good advice.

Should clarify, I really don't want to spend that much! My question is more can you get away with spending less and still do what I want to? Sounds like that's a yes!

I keep being advertised a place called Off Beat Bikes (in fort William but I guess they deliver).

When we were there they had a lot of ex-hire bikes for sale between £1-2k.

Not sure how much the batteries deteriorate etc but might be worth a look on their website.

Northern ride in Malton North Yorkshire. Ask to speak to Kev but don’t mention I recommended them. He might put the price up

I never knew there were so many bridleways until i bought one, have had it up some random places and always been met with smiles and nice chats with walkers (i usually slow down and twiddle a bit and puff loudly). I can get the 4 miles out from Christianbury in 15minutes if im on my own and can speedway drift the forest road corners with a foot out so its hardly boring either.

Having a closer look at the Decathlon offerings. The ST900 looks like it will fit the bill.  It is very well specced and I think you will struggle to beat it for the money.

On the other end of the spectrum. If your approach is more gravel than mountain and your commute is not too far. I am a big fan of these. Single speed, light(er) weight so easier to get on/in the car. Belt drive so no maintenance and on sale at £824:

ooff.

first post since Andy Politt died.... just getting back into bouldering, 3 year hiatus broken by wave 2 of 'rona and my youngest  getting well keen... that's pushed me back on this wonderful forum. Doubt I can give any salient advice on climbing these days... but MTB... yep.. I could help I reckon!
