Information is Beautiful the Billion Dollar Gram....

(Excellent book on graphs and diagrams is Edward Tufte's The Visual display of Quantitative Information, his PowerPoint Essay is pretty good too)

Nice graphic.  Proving to me at least, that if America slipped into the sea tomorrow, the planet would be better off by far, though I wonder who would rise to the fore in her stead?

If only we had pulled our fingers out in the 17the Century ...

Have you seen the size of Bill Gates' square on that jobbie?

Fucker.  He better give it all away or me and my punker pals are gonna haunt his ghosts' bum.

The scale isn't perfect. Look at Bill Gates vs Facebook. It's not three times as big a box.

The loss of human life is indeed tragic to those affected and their families, but humans are not the be all and end all of life on this planet, yet at the moment we're fucking it up pretty badly.  (I'm not very anthropocentric in my world view I'm afraid Will).

The watercourse will recover from the spill in a number of years. When you take into account the number of people in families/husbands/wives/children who will be affected there will be thousands of years of combined suffering and sorrow.

Is that objective enough?

Sorry Will, I'm with Slackers on this one. I think human life is pretty damn sacred, but not the most sacred thing in the world. I think 40 tons of oil is gonna damage a river system irreversibly. THink about the number of people, and plants, and animals who rely on that water. Fishes will die, birds will die, animals which drink from the river will die, animals which rely on the fish in the river for food, will die. There will be a lot more death than 75 workers. Hundreds of animals, many of whom will be a major food source for the human population who live along the river. It's a fucking disaster, especially if it's in an area where there's not much importation of goods, and foods.

"Irreversibly" is a fairly commiting word to use. In a few decades at most I would think that the ecosystem would have recovered to much of what it once was. Especially considering the discharge a river like that will have. The pulse of shite should move through much faster than if this had happened on a smaller river. Nature is pretty good at dusting itself off in general. I've seen succession happen much faster in more hostile environments where succession has to start from pioneer so it should happen reasonably quickly in this place.

The ecosystem will suffer for sure. The main channel will be a write off for some time but tributaries to it should remain largely unaffected. In the grand scheme of things it will be put to rights.

Not really down with the post 9/11 anniversary stuff, but as usual the Big Picture has done good...

Was in the US for 9/11 a year or so after it happened.  Everyone left the office and went and stood in a hall, some people started crying and got all emotional as they said how they felt on the day.  I found it all too weird as this was in Houston and none of them had any friends or relatives directly affected so quietly returned to my work.

First pic looks like a vaguely human figure. Wonder if they did that deliberately?
