Harcles Hill Pics

Changed the names and the grades to make more sense. Connecting TPB into AGL doesn't make it much harder, as there is a good rest just before finishing TPB, but it's still good fun! :8)

Tennis Players Beware (V5) - sitstart from the low jug right of the arete, move onto the arete using only holds on the arete (pinches and slopers, get away from that crack!) to acheieve a standing position. Finish on the jug at the top of the arete. (basically, climb the arete and only the arete)

Arete Good Laugh (V3) - Start (or continue TPB) at the point where reaching for the jug becomes possible, and instead palm the underneath of the roof, move right hand further up the arete (but stay on the arete!), adjust feet and go for the very top...

Hey dude and that!
It's only a small crag, but good value.
Lots of easier stuff of a similiar height, a couple of tricky sit-starts...
It's only about, what, 6 metres long, but the central section is fantastically
blank apart from two crimps.
Nice place to chill.
Will be a topo on ukb when the new site gets finished.

I'll show you around when you emigrate from Essex! ;)

That's most people's attitude I think, which is good,
cos little places like this wouldn't work with large groups.
Admittedly these problems on Harcles Hill are slightly
eliminate, but then so is most bouldering - why climb
the boulder on this side when you could climb the easy
slope on the other? ;)

And there are some cracking lines on the quarried stuff
round this way, just not as high a density of problems as
you'd find in the peak - but then, if you find a good
problem, you can spend weeks on it and be perfectly happy...

p.s.
Have fun on the business boulder with everyone
else at the themepark! I'll enjoy the cornershop... :)

Yep, locals already commented on my "very big bag", and it's
nowhere near XXL size...

Let me know what you think of the problems, whether the grades are ok
as well...
Good luck with the E2 - I don't think I'd go near any of those routes!

Oh, and there are some tricky sit-starts to the left,
haven't tried them cos of my arm, but if you have
any suggestions of grades they'd be useful for the
topo...

Cheers

We'll see about those sit starts, I'm not as good as I make out to be the reality is somewhat disappointing, i.e. I'm a fat lazy bastard. Those problems to the left look tricky I remember bouldering on here years ago so it shouldbe interesting.

Incidentally there's a nice traverse on the bottom of the overhanging buttress in the main quarry, that goes at about V2.

Sorry but as much as I'm a fan of esoteric bouldering and approve of you finding and exploring these obscure places, those photos and descriptions (the V3 at least) do seem a little laughable in how eliminate-y they are.

If you want to highlight the quality bouldering potential in Lancashire, you need to be showing some really impressive stuff, particularly to drag people away from more popular areas.

Yeah, I'd agree these problems are of mainly local interest,
but then again, I think that's a good enough reason to put them
on here, as there are a fair few people in the area who would be
interested.

And no I probably I wouldn't have posted the V3 on it's own,
but it makes a nice finish to the V5 so I thought I'd stick it in.
Personally I think the V5 is a quality problem, it has weird moves
on awkward holds and takes a little while to figure out.

...but don't worry, there are some truly awesome lines - the arete at
montcliffe and the prow at lester mill (see previous posts) are just two
examples. Unfortunately the weather's been pretty shit of late, both for
photos and climbing, so I haven't been able to get anything new done. I'll
post more when it happens...
