New forum niggles
November 04, 2004, 07:43:01 pm
Still trying to iron out speed issues with the new forum software.

I've re-installed the php accelerator which has helped a bit, and have been playing with database settings to not much avail.

I'm a bit pissed off that a widely available piece of software based upon the very fast phpBB performs so badly. Ok, I should have stress-tested it locally before going live but I cut corners.

I've lost all the uploaded avatars and attached files
Well, all I can say is I made a blunder there - sorry.

What else?
The RSS feed is still down, and some of the handy mods like the "suppress avatars and signature mod" are missing. Oh yeah, and all the extra smileys - I'm trying to dig up some really nice ones.

on the old version when writing some text you used to be able to select a word, then hit the Bold (or italics or whatever) button and it would put the Bold tags around your selection. Now in this new version you can't do that - its  a ballache.

Yeah, it works different now - you have to hit the b button, type or paste your text, then hit the b button again.

Not sure which I prefer yet - it'd be nice to have both - ie old style if something is selected otherwise new style.

aye, with the old style you could do both, that was good.

seems weird that they should  remove some functionality!

Do you use Firefox? If you use the rather excellent bbcode extension, that does it the old way...

I think it's ok with most recent versions of Firefox

Go here and install the extension.

Then restart firefox.

When you post and right-click in the reply box, you'll see a bbcode menu  - it's really handy for posting image links and stuff too...

I've removed the birthdays thing from the front page - bit cheesy and just bloat.

Things left to do:

- Re-instate the "suppress avatars and/or signatures" mod
- Hook up the album links to the gallery, not the forum album
- Restore the smilies

Errm....anything else let me know.

Aye, 'tis a bit better but it's still dog-slow - I'm seeing if my hosts will up my RAM allowance as i think it's that that's causing problems...

Re-organised the forum structure to make it (hopefully) less crowded and added the new FAQs forums

anyone else find that when you click a search to search for all terms in a post insteadof any (i.e. if it type in "walk on by" it shoudl only return posts containing "walk" and "on" and "by") it just brings back the normal results as if its just searched for any.

Can't access the new problems database, keep getting this:

You have requested a page that no longer exists - please use the toolbar to navigate to a current page.

Any clues?

Yep, needs re-instating as another change inadvertantly removed it.

Gone for good I'm afraid until the new version of the site is up, and that bit still needs writing. None of the old java stuff will work any more coz I've removed java from the server completely now. Sorry 'bout the disruption but there's only so much I can do at once.

If you log out / time out with post still unread then this will happen. I don't think it works as well as the old system.

Maze? How do you mean? The sub-forums or the portal stuff? I'm not sure the portal has any value here really, it was really for ukc.

I get a strange bug with the full emoticans window. It only pops up as a small sqauer window, compressing all the avatars after the first 3 or so lines. They stay compressed and unreadable even when the window is resized...
