Throwing mats down
September 09, 2022, 11:13:36 am
What’s with some people doing this? Is it a surplus of testosterone, drawing attention to themselves or do they like the ‘whump’ sound?. My first thought is that a dickhead has arrived when I hear it. Even more annoying when they do it near you especially when you are sitting three feet away on your mat and a load of dust flies in your face.

its because they are heavy and when you have 2 pads with the bag of boots and crap dangling off your shoulders by the time you get to the boulders you just want to get them off quick.
This doesn't apply to the Raven Tor walk in though.

Shark - you realise you’ve revealed (another?) a way for people to wind you up at the crag…

Sounds like it could be dealt with by an on the spot fine by the Tor police officer 😁

Not so much problem with that. However, turn up at an occupied crag and throw your mats down individually making noise and dust comes across as here I am, look at me, I own this place or being completely oblivious to anyone else.

In fairness mainly bouldering on my own and enjoying having places to myself I’m more probably more sensitive to these sort of unnecessary disruption when others turn up.

Is it acceptable if you throw the mat down on top of an incumbent team’s portable speaker?

That’s a reason I can relate to but I think if they were there first then asking them to turn it off would be best before going nuts.

This is quite funny to read from someone who may legally qualify for squatters rights under Ben's Roof.  :)

Yeah, divvies.
But goodness isn't it satisfying that brief feeling of weightlessness after a 45 minute walk in with two pads, spare shoes, hot and cold drinks, two guidebooks and a spare jumper just in case? Back stronger than fingers.

... turn up at an occupied crag and throw your mats down individually making noise and dust comes across as here I am, look at me, I own this place or being completely oblivious to anyone else.

Can't say I have ever really interpreted the underlying meaning behind the way someone puts their pads down, but I have noticed it is almost invariably a Snap pad which people do this with, possibly due to the extra weight meaning they don't just tumble and bounce like most other pads. I f**king hate snap pads, mostly because I find them to be absurdly bulky, and soft enough that I always fear for my ankles rolling when I fall on them. A few of my friends are Snap owners, and I absolutely refuse to carry them. Nothing screams "Londoners first trip out #climbingismypassion" more than a massive immaculate Snap pad thrown under Deliverance and a pair of baggy solutions. I am more than happy with my 10 year old discontinued Wild Country Big Air.

I opened this thread thinking it'd be about people throwing pads from high above, like from top of a crag so they don't have to walk them down. But, it's about... people taking their pads off...? Wild take, and I'm loving it.

That being said, I love nothing more than opening my pad out flat, then slapping it down on a dry, dusty day to really get that sand and soil in people's eyes. Only reason I bring a fan too, sprinkle salt into it from behind and direct it towards others.

This is some solid grumpy old man rant.

Probably just mad because you can't carry enough pads in to get the fat wumph that the youths can?

I thought this was going to be a rant about erosion, lamenting the near-highball nature of Ben's Roof given the drop in dust level due to careless pad chucking...

you wouldn't catch this sort of behaviour in Yorkshire.

Well quite, after all the Peak's only real purpose is to shield Yorkshire from the hordes of London based climbers.

Dust! You're lucky.

When I throw my pads down (actually I prefer to throw them up, in order to attain more velocity) they go squelch and get stuck.

Good morning all
In order to span several threads i have devised a Memorial Throw down to be held at an auspicious time over the weekend, this will be decided by the Royal Astrologer{Mystic Meg!, apologies for the fading cultural reference....actually is she still alive?} and will ask any "right" thinking boulderer to attend.
A gold embossed Moon pad will be made and used {The Moon Ma'am} as suggested by His Royal Highness the Dutchie on the Right-hand side and using a step ladder of your choice, it is to be launched in a great arc of togetherness signifying our beloved Queen's last flight from this earthly realm to the next.
The pads eventual return to earth will be akin to the biggest mike drop there has ever been, showing our overall subservience to our betters, those without pads may avert there eyes or with eyes clenched shut applaud in fevered revelry until the dust settles and covers our stricken bodies in deserved filth.
In Scotland there will be a mighty splat as there is as always "Nae dry grund". i have used this opportunity to capture the psychotic masses and sell the subsequent mud and grime facial as Scatological footage to try and reimburse the day i lost gainfully employed scrubbing the gimlets from my Laird's undermunge.

Carry on

When I throw my mats down while bouldering in coastal areas my intended display of manly prowess is often diminished as I emit a small yelp of terror while watching them roll downhill and wondering whether they will stop before bouncing off the cliff into the sea.

This. Or they invariably bounce towards the nearest bright green rock pool.

That time I was on Barrel Buttress at Helsby and looked up to see a full weight pad bouncing down the hill towards me. The irony if I'd been taken out by a piece of safety equipment. Never slam on a slope kids.

A friend and I were at the far left end of Toddy's wall at froggatt last winter when a couple of lads launched their pads down from the top of the crag... one pad cartwheeled right past us and off down into the woods... nearly took us out!!!
Incredible.... the young lads didnt see any problem in what they had done, and even chuckled at us after we left them to it!

There are definitely mat throwing ethics. It should be done with care, for maximum dramatic impact and superficial destruction, but without actual danger and risk to the audience.
