HMB - science or snake oil
September 12, 2022, 09:54:33 am
Hello UKB collective. I was doing some reading and wondering if anyone has experience or knowledge about supplementing with HMB. There seems to be some very promising things but as always that can sometimes be a bunch of guffage with a nice scientific spin.

I haven't used it, largely because there is no concrete study which shows it has any clear benefit

This article goes into some papers

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.mysportscience.com/amp/does_hmb_work&ved=2ahUKEwjT_vDLiI_6AhXxRkEAHWqVCVAQFnoECFoQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1AGkHGqla0qzCxZmtcp6gf

Essentially I think it is a waste of your money although you can do as you wish. Generally if its not Creatine or not banned by WADA it probably isn't really anything of worth at all.

Thanks, that's a good comprehensive review. I suspected that this might be the case but as always the prevailing literature (often sponsored by HMB producers) talks about improvements.

I’ve only ever seen HMB recommended as improving recovery time, rather than increasing muscle mass. Still, the linked article would discount that.

Examine are usually a reliable go-to for most of this stuff. Science without the marketing bullshit.

HMB

Sounds like some limited evidence for reduced muscle breakdown following high intensity exercise, but Leucine better for building muscle mass.

This was a really useful read. It seems that for anything but preventing catabolism it's snake oil. It might be of some use to people trying to cut weight before a project but otherwise it's not that helpful.
