Lakes Nesting Bird Restrictions
February 13, 2022, 10:23:20 am
Thought I'd put this on here as it might get missed on UKC, the Lakes bird restrictions are out for this year, listed at

https://www.frcc.co.uk/bird-restrictions/

I note that for boulderers, Wallowbarrow Gorge and Swarthbeck Gill (Colonel Hathi) are on the list. There also looks to be some restrictions to certain areas of St Bees.

I've bouldered in the Lakes for years and this is the first I've heard of any nesting restrictions whatsoever, especially for bouldering. Thanks for highlighting!

Gouther is the other one that often has restrictions but I guess those peregrines have moved house this year!

There's a reason that half the Lakes is called Raven Crag  ;)

Just seen this wrt the Wallowbarrow bouldering potentially not being included in the restriction, hopefully this will be cleared up.

Always assumed it was just the crag and not actually Hathi but maybe not?

UKC page and RAD both mention the boulders, so looks like both? Not been so not sure how far beneath crag Hathi is. I remember with Gouther that the Khukri boulder was OK but not the Atom Smasher one.

Is stonestar just the crag, or the Boulder as well?

I’ve not been but are the boulders right near the crag? If so I would assume both, but would be worth checking with Lakes BMC rep.

CH is at the same level as the ‘crag’ and less than 50m from the routes? Some of the other boulders are a fair bit lower down the hillside.

Anyhoos the UKC database says explicitly no climbing in the ghyll when the bird ban is in place. CH is int ghyll marra.

It’s a fair bit down the hill, as I remember, but, given that it’s a quiet spot, it’s probably best to assume it’s banned too, unless I learn otherwise. If other boulders at the base of crags are banned it would make sense that this one is too.

Researching whether Gouther had bird restrictions this year (looks like not) but thought I would share the list for this year:

Confirmation on the other channel that the Stonestar peregrine ban includes the boulders too https://www.thebmc.co.uk/modules/rad/view.aspx?id=7778

Thanks Tim. Should have posted here also. It was something I'd followed up at the bird restriction meeting in Feb and should have added to the RAD sooner.
