Wooden holds
January 04, 2022, 08:20:50 am
Hi, I'm currently after some wooden holds, 100-150, for a 45°. I've climbed on Hardwood Holds, which I think are nice, but I've not climbed on many more brands.
I'd like a range of sizes and styles of hold, except massive jugs. Does anyone have any good suggestions of holds to look at

Cheers

I'd go with crusher for the bread and butter stuff https://crusherholds.co.uk/.

For more interesting (and expensive) shapes and aesthetics Taylor Made Holds, Lock holds (on insta) and Grains to Gains do some nice holds.

I use Taylor Made Holds and also Sillygoat. Both are really nice to use.

I did a big, slightly controversial, write up in the main holds thread:

Hi John, Rick Ginns' stuff is a work of art. Mine are made of oak -  lovely wood, but absorbs more moisture than finer grained woods if the environment is really humid. I love mine fwiw.

Just to add a little detail. A bit underwhelmed by beastmaker, though I'd recommend their beech wide pinches, they are great. The best holds I have - by far- are their original leafy crimps. Top quality, unfortunately they don't make these any more. Maybe because the margin was too low?

Hardwood holds. I would recommend using their small symmetrical pinches as edges/layaways/crimps- nice size, just a little incut, they work well on my 40*. I'd recommend their board slopers. Get a pair or two of these if you can.

I have a whole collection but moving forward I will only buy hardwood holds.

In my experience they never ever condense and are the comfiest edge.

Buy yourself a belt sander, thick gloves, decent dust mask and either work outdoors or get a shop vac, mate. Its a great investment if you have a woody

Fixed that for you.  ;)

Buy yourself a belt sander, thick gloves, decent dust mask and either work outdoors or get a shop vac, and an enormous amount of spare time, mate. Its a great investment if you have a woody

:ras:
I enjoyed making my holds!
In terms of the holds I've bought; I have some from beastmaker, lock and hardwood and they are all great. I'd think variety is important.

So did I actually. It's just messy and 80 grit can tear your fingers apart pretty quick sharp!  I mean...maybe you guys weren't jamming your sanders in the vice and holding the wood blocks?

That sounds like the classic Dave Mac vid with the E7 hold shaping method, not sure if he even went for light eye protection!
