I love how ESG-conscious climbers are raving about the price and utility of their cheap boots made from oil-industry by-products, manufactured by SE Asian labour working under opaque labour terms and conditions.
Not a criticism, just an observation.

Guilty / conflicted (and after the weekend I'm looking longingly at my neighbour's whopping great big pick-up).

. System change not climate change!  Individual action vs. the need to holistically change systems to affect the level of change required.  It is the classic critique of environmentalists to point out the hypocrisy of their individual actions without accounting for the system they live in. Besides which the additional fossil fuel burned in order to reheat my pinky toes is offset by the boots.  He said desperately trying to justify his actions.    I am now searching, unfruitfully, for  a local, plant based snow boot factories with a worker's cooperative.

I think walking boots are a poor choice compared to a welly for boggy or snowy approaches, as you just end up with muddy or wet trousers, unless you are going for a gater too, at which point you may as well get the red socks and compass out and leave the pads at home!

That’s putting aside the care required to keep leather boots in good nick.

These seem popular.
These ones are pretty warm and waterproof but have a fairly thin and bendy sole - I got a huge thorn through my foot in them.
I'm currently on a pair of these which have a proper walking boot sole and build, and seem decent
Toasty in the snow?

Well, I've just got back from a walk in the £30 decathlon wellies, and though I was warm I do have slightly damp feet. That might be a bit of snow going down them, but I have noticed this before on a really long boggy walk. I suspect the cheaper ones are more waterproof as they have the plastic that goes most of the way up, rather than just the 'waterproof membrane'. I'd say if you want something for typical grit bouldering crags then the cheaper ones would be the best bet, just don't expect them to very comfortable or durable for mega long walks over the moors.

Also did a long snowy hike in a pair of these ESG Decathlon booties today.  Second season with them, feet remained warm and dry throughout.

Fair enough! You could have said the same thing without the ‘fuck off’ you know.

(it was only a joke you know.. even if a bit crap, dunno why you’re so unhappy)

I have these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bekina-Steplite-Wellington-Wellies-Insulated/dp/B0747PKL56 provided by work albeit in bright orange, great in the mud and for walking around in rivers, used them a lot for personal use too although they arent the best for long walk they stay toasty with some wooly socks.

I use wellies a lot. Rather than spend big bucks I look for the cheapest available wellies with a good sole and then use fleece wellie socks/liners for warmth e.g  https://www.soletrader.co.uk/joules-fleece-welly-socks/jl4660kh?gclid=Cj0KCQiA15yNBhDTARIsAGnwe0WEGdlg4PNF9MqaadnI3lex4ViH3WjJnm5iog-kBEShz5ahv8shsrgaAmXVEALw_wcB

For me the sole is massively important. Lots of wellies, including most expensive neoprene/fleece lined ones have shit soles. Not what you want when you're teetering around on wet/snowy/icy Rock with a cumbersome pad full of kit on your back.
