Will Raven Tor be dry today
July 30, 2021, 08:37:20 am
It's pissing it down! My friend wants to go to the Tor for a bit of bouldering. We haven't been before, we are aware of the reputation for perma-dry but there's perma-dry and perma-dry you know? It's pissing it down and has been all night, probably will all day. For those who have been, is there a limit to how much one can expect from this sanctified piece of limestone? Ta.

Should be ok. The stuff around Ben's Roof is pretty weatherproof, it can struggle with seepage but given it's been dry recently you should be good to go. Enjoy your pilgrimage.

While we're at it could we make a list of fully perma dry crags or problems? I'll go first:

Jess' Roof (7C), Almscliff

I've only been to it once but it was bone dry during a monsoon.

Snow-proof probs list

@Wellsy- big limestone crags (with the seeming exception of Kilnsey) tend to respond to long term changes to the water table rather than short term weather events. So, as we’re still in the long daylight hours part of summer, the plants are still growing and there’s been a relatively long dry spell recently, Raven Tor is unlikely to be seeping today and if it is, it’ll be the water from earlier in the week rather than last night.

Condensation’s another matter though- if it’s humid and the temperature’s increased recently then the moisture will condense on the rock because that warms up slower than the air. It can be dramatic, particularly on overhanging rock (ie lime bouldering areas) but will return to normal once either the rock warms up or the air cools down again. Again it’s unlikely to be a problem today but bear it in mind when the autumn comes- when people say “I can’t believe it, I went to the Tor and suddenly the whole crag is fucked with seepage” it’s often just condensation and will be gone within a day.

Have a good time. If you come back from your first session at the Tor without wanting to cry then you’re a better man than me.  ;)

Just go to Earl.

I wouldn't go today! I can usually see the monument from the back garden but not today. It's very damp with low cloud.

Have a good time. If you come back from your first session at the Tor without wanting to vomit in despair then you’re a man with far worse taste than me.  ;)

I had a great time! Polished and sandbagged to fuck but that's part of the "charm" so can't be shirty. Did Verbal Abuse 6A+, Chimes 6B and Too Hard For Jack Leach 6C. Be cool to go back and do some harder shit. The psyche is real.
