UK bouldering with good landings
August 08, 2021, 12:38:10 am
Going on a solo bouldering trip next week, looking for somewhere with good landings, and not a massive walk in. A plus if it is somewhere windy or cooler. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Anywhere specific in the UK?

Rough difficulty level?

Tricky to give a general answer as lots of venues will have a mix with some perfect landings and some definitely not!

Anywhere really, I'm in the North of England but don't mind travelling.

And as long as there is a good amount of f7a to f7c+ I'll be happy.

Maybe churnet or Northumbria? Sandstone generally makes for better landings?

Thanks, what is North Wales like (generally)  in terms of landings?

I wouldn't say Tan Y Grisiau is that good landing wise! The two main 7A and 7C problems are highball and rocky respectively.

Churnet is a good shout. Generally very friendly and lots to do.

I'd avoid the Lakes if landings are most important thing. Some exceptions but generally you need a few pads to make things safe.

Burbage West and North are good landings wise but it's too hot for grit.

Lots of good landings in Northumberland, Kyloe In, Back Bowden and Bowden, Shaftoe all very friendly.

Well I didn't know what grades they were after, I just giving a broad spectrum of ideas.

North Wales has plenty of stuff with decent landings - I did a lot on my own with just 2/3 pads. There's just so much to do there you're bound to find something.

Weather is a factor. If it's good in the West, take advantage of that as it's less often good in the West. Otherwise, head East.

The Smackhead boulder at Gallt yr Ogof is pretty safe and not too high. The steep side facing the mountain has some very tough problems indeed!

Obvious choices in Northumberland for this grade range are Kyloe-in, front Bowden and back Bowden. Shortish walk ins, tonnes of problems in the 7s with flat landings and mostly drop offs so no sketchy mantels. Shaftoe is generally short with flat landings, font Boulder and nebs Boulder offer some short 7s with good landings. Rothley doesn’t have a lot in the 7s but gloom and well hard problem are worth checking out.

Craig y Longridge has what you need but isn’t as aesthetic as the Northumberland venues.

Other delightful places to travel to could include: Raven Tor right hand side, Stanage Business boulder, and some old railway bridge in Leicestershire etc etc......
