Low tide prediction for LPT
June 04, 2021, 10:34:20 am
I’m confused about tide forecasts. Been using the NTSLF website recommended on the CC website for Llandudno but it’s prediction varies by about an hour from the BBC one ie low tide today 12.55 compared to 13.56 from the BBC.

Anybody explain the variance and more importantly which is best for LPT

The NTSLF is given in GMT, the BBC in BST.

We use tides 4 fishing, doesn't need any translation with the times either. Works well predicting fish activity too.

Worth having a good play with all the features, stuff like swell and current direction is good for understanding how high the water level really will be any given day and it's effect on climbing conditions.

Llandudno surf report also predicts tides: https://magicseaweed.com/West-Shore-Beach-Surf-Report/6813/

Worth knowing what the swell is doing as well as the time and size of the tides.

+1 for MSW Their weather forecast is pretty accurate too, all you need for coastal in once place. Apart from humidity..

Does magic sea weed have the dew point on as well?
Can't seem to find that and it's pretty crucial for coastal cragging I reckon

Nope. Not critical for surf conditions I guess. Do any forecasts have it?

MSW is my go to.. I climb on the coast a lot.  Tide time and size (amazes me how many people don't realise this varies), wind direction and strength (a lot of coastal venues need a breeze on them to dry things out), swell size and direction, and weather... All in one place.   :great:

Indeed, knowledge is power.

A fairly well known climber was asking about conditions for some local DWS and was told the water depth was fine on a high spring tide, but he said he didn't want to do them then because the water is still pretty cold in the Spring.

Windy shows the dew point in its Meteogram display. Weather Underground shows what the dew point currently is, but doesn't forecast it.

I've always just used the tides tab on the UKC crag page for LPT. Seems to work well.

Yeah tides 4 fishing has the dew point in the weather forecast bar..

Personally find this essential for sea cliff stuff

Good point. MSW doesn't, so it's good to have this too.

Just a reminder to bookmark Pete H's excellent guide to the dark art of grease forecasting on The Diamond (but applicable to many other venues).

This is great! I would only add a little about swell and Tide size to this, for SW Bouldering on West and North facing coasts.. Otherwise this information is perfect for here too.

Big swells combined with Spring (big) tides mean everything will get drenched and take longer to dry out or stay wet.  eg. Tintagel may be unclimable throughout the tides on large swells

Neap (smaller) tides and small swells can leave certain crags and boulders untouched by the ocean at all.

It's a fickle game and as Pete suggests a dark art learnt from experience.

If you're not a seaside local and want to increase your chances of good conditions... Look for a good onshore breeze, low tide combined with sunshine hitting your chosen venue and small waves (swell size less than 2ft).

The only other thing I would add would be make sure you know your exit point and when to leave to avoid being cut off! (in the last week I have witnessed some first time visitors to Hartland leaving it very late to escape from Carnage wall and contemplating going up a tottering pile of choss to get out... Fortunately we were up top to shout directions although the escape wouldn't have been available for much longer!)

shurt and I had a fun time after getting cut off at Sandymouth. He had a near death experience step kicking his way up teetering choss, dropping his glasses on the way, I opted for waiting for tide to drop and it nearly getting dark before wading out chest deep with pad and rucksack on head.

Nice one. Useful. Just need a fog forecaster too.
