Five Ten Crawe vs Aleon
January 30, 2021, 04:53:53 pm
Ive never seen a pair of Aleons and don’t knowingly know anyone who owns a pair but they sound intriguing - who wouldn’t want a pair of shoes designed by Fred Nicole?!

They seem similar in the write ups to the Crawe which I’ve grown to love but with a few other features including a more pointy toe which could be useful on a couple of my projects.

The main thing putting me off ordering a pair is that they sound like they are a wider fit at the front than the normal five ten shape (I have very narrow feet)

Anyone know what the fit is like?

Blancos are for Malham and Tor routes - these are for bouldering.

I don’t think the Aleon are particularly wider than any other other 5.10 I own, but the toe box is a completely different shape to anything else which is taking a bit of getting used to.

Thanks. That’s reassuring. Probably worth a punt then

New Adidas sizing applies, but if you’ve got Crawe you already know about this

Have you looked at the unparallel up ones Shark? I’ve got two pairs now that I’ve only been able to try on the board but impressed so far....

(I still ❤️ Scarpa though)

All too confusing. There’s too much choice out there.

The Aleon intrigued me and thought worth a look at seeing as I’m getting on with the Crawes so well particularly as they are reduced to £95 with banana fingers at the minute.

£70 at sports direct... Obviously this involves giving money to that tosser Mike Ashley though so you might want to stick to a climbing retailer.

The Aleons have just arrived. Initial impressions is that not only do they look the same but there is so little difference between them and the Crawe that I’m surprised 5.10 has both in their line up. The toe has a slightly more pointy profile and is more downturned and the heel is narrower. The pointy profile means my little toes are more crimped in the Aleon but that may be because they aren’t worn in.

I’ll be keeping them so will update.

I had assumed the Crawe were more like an Anasazi Velcro, are they quite downturned then?

They are flat but have an indentation that forms a sort of rim around the edge that makes them toe down quite well - or at least that’s my impression. Will be interesting to see if a more obvious downturn makes much difference on Bens and Soul Crusher

My rationale for keeping them is that they will be a replacement for the Crawes as they wear out. As the Aleons wear out I’ll know which I prefer.

Unparellel seem to have built their entire business in this model, the amount of Dow turned shoes they offer is bewildering!

Next think you'll be saying is people aren't choosing shoes based on them being a colour they like as it matches their shirt.

Was forced to use my unused Aleons on Saturday on Bens Roof having neglected to pack one of my Crawes. Obviously a bit painful but they performed well and I got a new link. The narrower toe worked better on one of the holds (a shallow pocket) and the downturn also helped to claw an edge noticeably better. No issue with toe hooking. I’ll be wearing them on Bens from now on.

I notice there is also a VCS version of the Dragon which again must be similar to the Crawe and Aleon and in the same colours. Presumably a little more downturned again (the old ones crippled my arches as do most severely downturned shoes).

Incidentally the laced versions of the Dragons are currently going for £65 on the Adidas website. Also for those with different sized feet you can buy odd sizes.

I saw the other day that they’ve officially called time on the whole Anasazi range.

Just noticed there’s what looks like a kind of modernised Pink on the Adidas website called the NIAD. Would be interesting (from an academic viewpoint as I’ve switched to Unparallel to the extent that I have a stockpile of the two types I like) to know what they’re re like compared to the previous Pinks and if they’ll be releasing a NIAD Velcro.

I had to look up what a NIAD is, best I could find is

"National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases"

Looks like they’ve modelled the toe box on a duck bill, not seen anything quite so squared off at the end of a climbing shoe before!

They're product range boggles my mind. How on earth is anyone supposed to pick a suitable pair when there are so many options?!

Has anyone tried the new Dragons?

Own two pairs of the dragons (lace). Nothing like the old ones fit wise. More like a hiangle, but a fair bit softer with really sticky rubber. Rate them highly so far. Heel is better (closer fitting) than on the old dragons too.

Yeah, didn’t spot that. Looks like the same toe shape as the Moccs, which they’re also ditching. Given the name I suppose they’re aiming them at people who want to do a lot of crack climbing, although I wouldn’t choose lace-ups for that personally.
