Is sphagnum the most important plant on earth? Instead of buying into Black Friday, we’re taking this opportunity to promote #GreenFriday – support the environment and plant one square meter of sphagnum moss to help return our moorlands back to their green and healthy state.

It’s that time of the year again where retailers ‘slash’ prices for the now international Black Friday, but we want to do something different. The BMC recognises that there is a climate emergency that is already affecting large parts of the world, including upland and mountain areas that we love and which form the basis of our outdoor activities. That’s why we want to use this opportunity to promote our principle conservation campaign – The Climate Project – for #GreenFriday!

Act now to support #GreenFriday!

For £25 you can help return our peatlands to their former, carbon sequestering, beauty. We want to use your donation to plant one square meter of sphagnum moss, a plant powerhouse that takes as much carbon out of the atmosphere as a tropical rainforest. Peat moorlands cover 15% of the UK, but many have been dug up, drained or destroyed. The Peak District moorland landscape is now the most degraded in Europe and damaged peat can be a great carbon emitter.

Moors for the Future was founded in 2003 to fight back. So far they’ve transformed over nearly 8,000 acres of peat moors across the Peak District and South Pennines.

The Climate Project supports the work of Moors for the Future. Your support will help:

Actively fight climate change
Reduce wildfire risk
Reduce flooding risk
Protect endangered wildlife
It costs £25 to plant one square metre of sphagnum moss and create a healthy moor.

We want to say a big thanks to every BMC member who continues to support us through the Coronavirus crisis.

From weekly Facebook Lives and GB Climbing home training videos, to our access team working to re-open the crags and fight for your mountain access, we couldn’t do it without you.

Did you know that we've just launched a new U27 membership offer for just £1 / month? And with full membership from £1.66 / month, it's never been easier to join and support our work:
