I don’t find it much use on shoulders (I’m too bony maybe and it bounces around a lot) but works great on forearms.

My fave is for triceps - massaged when you have your arm as if you are scratching the back of your neck.... luuuuurvely.

Not used a massage gun so can't make a direct comparison but my missus recently bought this neck massager (£50)

Each side is made up of two knobbly interlocked 'starfish' shaped things, and really dig in. You can crank hard on the straps to really drive it in, or even lie on it like the traditional roll on a tennis ball treatment (agony). Obviously quite bulky and mains powered. I suspect its more useful for stiff backs, shoulders, legs etc rather than arms and elbows which you can probably target better with a massage gun.

I use this on my often sore lower back, and find it really helps ease it.

How did you stumble upon that! Anyway it comes from a shop in Bishops Stortford, nothing good has ever come out of that town!

Spotted a mini massage gun for £25 in the middle of Lidl. Worth a punt?

This is how it ends isn't it? (see compression garments, glucosamine, and bathing in liquid nitrogen)

Cynicism aside, many people liked them at least to begin with. How many are still in regular use? How many are gathering dust in a cupboard somewhere?

I use mine daily. Before and after exercise and I can tell when I don’t use them, they definitely work imo.

I think problem with small/cheap ones can be low stall power, which means you can't apply the necessary force to work out a knot etc.

Duncan: I use mine weekly on average I'd say. I find it most useful for sorting out neck/shoulder knots, but also if I've been overexuberant on the bike or trotting down a hill too fast. Not sure what the evidence base is looking like these days, but if it's a placebo it's a good one!

I don’t use mine that often but I have found that if I do a big bike ride 100 miles plus and I give my thighs a good pummelling after I’ve got out of the shower. I don’t get cramp later in the evening.

Not used my Theragun for a while, but I've previously been very grateful for it - kneading into submission the issues in my elbows and shoulders / neck  (lots of driving and office work make them prone to problems). I view it the same as my Armaid - perhaps it's quackery but if so, I'm happy to pay for the placebo effect - cheaper and longer lasting than the physio I've had.

We have one in the house and my thought was that for the cost of a single sports massage it was worth a punt. It's a Renhpo (sp?). The cheaper ones I've tried stall as Stubbs says.

Good timing. I was looking into massage guns recently as I do believe most of my upper torso needs a good pummelling. I will heed the low stall power warning. Any recommendations at the <£60 mark??
