ACCESS IN NORTHUMBERLAND
September 23, 2020, 11:56:34 am
Three issues for y'all to consider....

Kyloe In: Timber operations have started above and in front of the crag. This means no weekday access until things are concluded. There will be some selective thinning in front of the crag.

Access to the crag at weekend is OK, use the agreed approach and be careful around any timber stacks and equipment.

Queens Crag: I have spoken directley with the tenent farmer who access is agreed with. He is unaware of any threats by the landlord to 'clamp' vehicles or attempt to restrict access. (Historically some residents in the bungalows have been 'anti' - the rumour probably originates with them)
So, access the crag is as currently agreed. Do not call into the farmhouse, the £2.00 fee is waived during the Covid period.

Simonside: Timber operations have closed the main Simonside car parks, it is still possible to access the crags from Lordenshaws (The long way!) or from the small car park and footpath at Tosson Tower.

Useful info. Any thinning on top of Kyloe In to stop the pine-needle avalanches?

They are clearing the wood above, anything left near the edge is pretty much at our descretion to remove....

I don't really know how fast it dries - it's obviously a bit sheltered from the wind by the forest - but is it likely to be dry Saturday/Sunday do you think given rain today and forecast tomorrow?

If the forecast is right it will be dry.
I will likely be there sat if it’s windy and depending on the surf forecast.

Two forecasts to worry about, what could go wrong.

Further to the above...

There was at least one interaction with the contractors engaged in the felling at Kyloe In at the weekend. I have spoken with Scottish Woodlands to confirm access to the crag.
The contractors conducting the felling have either ‘got behind’ or under estimated the volume of work involved  and are going to be working Saturdays.  So, until the works are concluded, which is estimated to be the end of October,  it is Sundays only at Kyloe In.

As ever avoid any machinery and log piles when you’re in there.
(Here’s hoping they don’t end up needing to work the Sundays as well!)

Regards,

Steve
