Camper van insurance beta
August 17, 2020, 02:27:00 pm
I've got a cheap converted Transit  covered on my multi vehicle insurance with Admiral but when I asked how much it would be to add my son as a named driver who has just passed his test it came back as over £5K  :o

Any providers out there that might yield something sane or is it impossible?

No useful beta, but I remember when I finished uni and went away for a year I spent ~1.5k to buy a van and about the same for the insurance for the year.

No idea what they are like with youngsters but Brent Acre are worth calling.

They gave me by far my best quote for a converted van and you talk to someone who actually understands the conversion process rather than just reading from a script.

I've just insured a (non-converted) van and Direct Line were about £250 cheaper than the best price on any price comparison site. Maybe worth a go?

For a new driver it'll be extortionate anywhere though I'd have thought. I passed 3 years ago and for the first year on a cheap car it was north of £1500  :o . More than halved after a year and then halved again the year after that.

I'm using this company at the moment https://www.onesureinsurance.co.uk/ Works out fairly cheap for me, and best of all they don't do that 'Here's your renewal, that'll be an extra £1k this year please' thing that a lot of insurers seem to do.

Not sure what they're like for younger drivers though. Always seems a bit of a roll of the dice as to whether you can get a quote that isn't outrageous.

Comfort are a specialist camper insurer and good value, I was amazed that the price for my motorhome was lower than my car.

But from memory they don't insure U21s and admit that 21-25 premiums will be high. But as a named driver on a policy it may be different.

Second Brentacre. Not sure what they're like for young drivers but I've had my van insured with them for 6 years. Cheaper insurance than my car and with good customer service.

Don't know about vans but had a similar experience when tried to put daughter on our current insurance with mainstream company, basically priced because they don't want the business.   Cancelled policy and insured with Diamond (found via comparethemarket) at much lower but still somewhat eye-watering price.  Renewed twice with them and then went to LV this year who are now substantially cheaper (age 20, 3 years since test).

Depending on your situation in terms of son needing to drive the van all the time its worth checking costs for policy alteration, if not needing year round access the cheapest option is to insure for full year and then remove driver when you don't need and take the refund .

Maybe not relevant or applicable to a young driver - but seen the new pay by the mile insurance deals?

Additional 50 year old driver on my California £20 per year. My 19 year old son on the same policy £2900. No idea how they work it out.
