28" 4k monitor
August 11, 2020, 04:06:54 pm
Hi all,
With extented WFH looking to get a large 4K monitor to replace my two screen setup that I don't especially like. Looks like a 28" is about the sweetspot in size/price and want a 4k one (3900 by 2100 pixels approx) at that size - especially as this enables loads more zoom/teams people to appear on screen at once etc..

Any recommendations? Not after anything with gaming capabilities. AOC and Samsung seem to be in the frame at the moment for c.£240
Tom

I got a slightly lesser spec BenQ one (25") and I'm really pleased with it. They have 4K equivalents (although these seem a fair way above your stated budget). I don't know if you'll share it with Mrs TomTom but the whole stand is very adjustable. I thought I wanted a larger one (27") but was told it was excessive and I think that's correct sat in front of it now.

I spend a fair bit of time on AutoCad and it has a mode to enhance the colours (which is great against black).

Thanks Paul - really want something to replace the laptop screen extended with a 19" monitor next door. Generally I'm not a fan of the two monitor set up. I'll have a mull. MrsTT can swivel - she's got her own back breaking posture wrecking set up she refuses to change.... :D

Sounds obvious but it is definitely worth getting a screen with adjustable height. I bought one years ago which isn't, and the combination of that and working at a dining room table is definitely doing bad things to me.
Screen wise my partner has a Dell P2715Q and uses for looking at satellite data/geomorphology analysis etc., has no complaints. Rumour has it that games work allright on it too. Her set up has it's own (reasonable spec) GPU etc., not sure if that is relevant.

Tom, I got this one (https://www.ebuyer.com/753190-benq-pd2700q-27-led-qhd-ips-designer-monitor-9h-lf7la-tbe?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4qec_bKV6wIVCbLtCh1ISQGaEAQYAiABEgJ-mvD_BwE) at the start of lockdown. It’s QHD (slightly more resolution that HD). It’s adjustable height and can swivel vertically, which is great for massive Excel datasets. It also have 3 inputs, so I run three laptops off one screen (two jobs, one personal)

For record, when brands say 4K they generally mean UHD. Not sure there is much point buying a true 4K monitoring, useless you are editing or watching a lot of 4K content.

That's what I have but in the 25".

Dan does yours do anything odd when a laptop goes to the lock screen (with 3 perhaps it never gets the chance)? I don't know whether it's the monitor (USB hub) or the laptop causing it but I get "new hardware found" sound repeatedly.

Cheers Dan - QHD is halfway between HD and 4K or UHD iirc. the 4K thing means if it’s got the pixels you can squeeze more zoom/teams people in on one screen. Yes can get about 12 on my laptop but more than 30 if I plug into our £250 4K 40” tv... but that’s too much for my desk!!

That’s what got me thinking.
Cheers for the tip. 27 not too big?

27 is large, but she also uses a dual screen set up, so obviously finds more screen better. If using a single screen for what I use it for, i'd want as much as possible, but horses for courses!

No have experienced that. My main issues loosing Bluetooth connection between devices.

QHD: 2560x1440
UHD: 3840 x 2160
4K:4096 x 2160 (Essentially wider, 17.9 rather than 16.9)

Size is great, I would go bigger if I had the space.

I have a BenQ EW3270U UHD (3840 x 2160) 32". It is rather large, but this is perfect for me when working where I often have a lot of things going on on the screen at the same time. It's possibly not ideal for you, but this is a general plug for BenQ, would recommend. You can get ones which are around your size requirements and price range, I think.

I've a 32" AOC curved monitor but its only 1080 wish i'd got for a QHD one for gaming but the colours and the build quality for the price i thought were very good.

I've never had a duff Dell monitor, their thin bezels are lovely - but suspect the price is out of range.

I use my Ultrasharp for LightRoom as it has great (and accurate) colour definition, then borrowed a second from work at start of lockdown.

By fluke, this means i'm running a Dell laptop in a dell dock with 2x Dell monitors and they all play nicely together.

They don't seem to make a 28", only 27" in QHD.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Just pulled the trigger on a BenQ 4k 28" one for £230 (ebuyer)... All the budget ones seemed to have some minor flaw or other (or maybe monitor reviewers are super fussy) but I'll give it a whirl.

Whilst I'm here - has anyone any webcam recommendations? I got a 'mid range' one from Amazon for MrsTT's desktop (£25) and its shite. Advertised as HD, widescreen, noise cancelling etc... and when you plug it in its 640 by 480 and sounds crap. I mean it'll do - but I'd pay £5-10 for on ebay...

Thanks Durbs. I'm steering clear of Dell at the moment after my much loved and still fast enough 4.5 yo Inspiron laptop just randomly packed up. Forced me to get an emergency £400 Lenovo job - which is actually pretty good except the colour balance on the screen is crap (I was really spoiled by the Dells screen).

A common issue with the Dell it transpires requiring a new mothboard (ie bin it). Only saving grace was that I got £160 for its remains on Ebay (high spec touchscreen was in demand as spares it seems).

In an alternative direction, I recently purchased an Acer Predator Z35P.
Can strongly recommend if you can find it for the correct price.
This has replaced my two Dell 24" monitors.

Not 4k and not 28", but good resolution, refresh rate and build quality.

I work from home as a (specialist) embedded software developer (as well as doing PhD research), and I can easily run a browser, 2 IDEs and a VM all open at once with enough real-estate and resolution to see whats going on.
Also great for gaming if your graphics card has the horsepower.
