Lakes & St.Bees - OK to visit?
July 07, 2020, 12:34:36 pm
I've got my copy of Greg's amazing Lakes Bouldering guide, and truth be told I'm getting a real urge/need to visit the Lakes in the next couple of weeks. I'd love to boulder at St.Bees and maybe do a days walking/easy trad in the mountains. Anyone know what the state of play is in the Lakes for visiting? Will van or wild camping be tolerated, and if so where is good over that side? Alternatively, any campsites reopened, say Wasdale or Eskdale way? Want to go but don't want to upset locals etc.

I think the Eskdale campsite is open again from next week

Currently planning a trip for late August, so in a similar situation. My understanding is that the campsites have been pretty heavily booked so might need a bit of checking around. Not sure about wild camping though.

Good knowledge folks, got the nod from a local source on an acceptable wild camping spot, thanks.

Bit of advice please?

Is the parking back up and running  - I assume so.

Also - Whats the walk between Apiary and Fishermans steps like.

And - which is easiest to get into the sea from for a quick snorkel, Apiary or Fishermans (From what I can remember, it'll be fairly straight forward for both).

And - I assume its not know for mad currents that will sweep us off to scotland? (Usual caveats.. don't be dicks, keep and eye, stay pretty close to shore etc).

Parking was running 2 weekends ago. It's £3.

The rope between Apiary and Fisherman's was wet and slimy from previous rain which made it feel a bit sketchy. I preferred to go up/down the groove a few metres to the right rather than use the rope. Rest of the walk is dead easy.

I didn't take pads with me to Fisherman's. Taking pads would be fine but you might prefer to throw them up first.

Can't help with the swimming, it was our first visit there.

We swam last time, no issues with currents etc, that said not sure what the situation was wrt tide times. Low iirc... So probably quite slack.

Apiary area, just went in off the slabs.

Cheers guys - had a lovely afternoon evening there yesterday, no issues with swimming, all felt fairly safe and no discernable currents.

Viz was utterly shite though so kids couldn't see much with masks on.

Pretty silty all along that coast unfortunately.
